WooCommerce “one-click checkout” can mean two different things: wallet buttons such as Apple Pay or Google Pay that use a shopper’s existing wallet, or a Buy Now button that lets an eligible logged-in customer pay with a method saved to their store account. Choose the flow first: wallet checkout can serve qualifying new or returning shoppers, while the documented Cashier Buy Now flow is for customers with a qualifying account and purchase history.
Choose the one-click checkout flow that fits your store
| Flow | Who can use it | What the shopper uses | Typical placement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Express checkout | Shoppers whose wallet, device, browser, region, and account qualify; may include guests | Payment and contact details already available through a wallet or account, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, or Link | Product, cart, or checkout page, depending on gateway and eligibility |
| Returning-customer Buy Now | Registered customers meeting the plugin’s order-history and payment-method requirements | A payment method saved to the customer’s store account | Buy Now button on all products or selected products, as configured in Cashier |
WooCommerce describes express checkout as letting customers “quickly pay for a product or service using pre-filled information from an existing account” in its Stripe express checkout documentation. This is not the same as a store-account repeat purchase: wallet buttons depend on the shopper’s wallet and device, while direct Buy Now depends on a qualifying logged-in customer and saved payment method.

Set up wallet-based express checkout with Stripe
Stripe’s WooCommerce extension offers express checkout methods including Amazon Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link by Stripe. The available methods depend on your Stripe account, location, site configuration, and customer eligibility.
Recommended Free Tools
- Secure the site. Serve every page over HTTPS with a valid SSL certificate.
- Connect Stripe. Install and connect the WooCommerce Stripe extension, then confirm the Stripe account and webhooks are configured.
- Enable the payment methods. In WordPress admin, open WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > Stripe > Payment Methods, select the express checkouts you want, and save.
- Check method-specific requirements. Apple Pay requires server, TLS, and domain setup; Google Pay requires the domain to be enabled in the Stripe account; Link availability varies by country. Apple Pay and Google Pay are controlled together in the extension settings.
- Review the preview and eligibility notices. Confirm where buttons are expected to appear and test the pages and devices your customers use. Stripe’s express checkout guide describes supported placement on product, cart, and checkout pages, subject to method and shopper eligibility.
Why an enabled wallet button may not appear
A setting being enabled does not guarantee that every shopper sees a button. The site, payment method, browser, device, wallet account, country, and saved payment details must all qualify. Stripe also lists exclusions for some product and checkout configurations, including some non-default product types, composite products, pre-orders charged on release, and certain tax configurations for non-shippable products.

Required custom checkout fields can also prevent an express payment when the button appears on a page that does not collect those fields. Check the requirements of your product, tax, shipping, and field setup before relying on a wallet button as the only checkout route.
Set up a direct Buy Now button for returning customers
WooCommerce Cashier documents a separate Buy Now module for repeat purchases. Its guide requires a registered customer with at least one completed order, paid through an eligible gateway after saved cards were enabled. The gateway must support the flow and have saved payment methods enabled.

- Confirm gateway support. Check that your payment gateway is one of those supported by the current Cashier documentation, and enable saved cards or payment methods in that gateway.
- Open Cashier settings. In WordPress admin, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Cashier.
- Enable the module. Turn on Buy Now and configure its options.
- Choose product coverage. Select the all-products option to replace Add to cart with Buy Now, or use the per-product option for selected items.
- Configure optional checkout details. Set any coupon or shipping-method options you want Buy Now to apply, then save.
- Test with a qualifying account. Confirm the current plugin version’s behavior using a registered customer who meets its saved-method and completed-order requirements.
For an eligible returning customer, Cashier describes the flow as purchasing without visiting the cart or entering payment details again. The exact behavior can vary by installed plugin version and gateway, so verify it in your store rather than assuming every Buy Now configuration bypasses the same steps.

If your store uses WooCommerce Cart and Checkout blocks, confirm that the gateway supports express checkout in that setup. The Checkout block’s Express Checkout block renders only when an active gateway supports express checkouts. WooCommerce recommends WooPayments where available; Stripe and PayPal Payments have their own support and compatibility rules. Do not assume a shortcode-based button or feature behaves identically in blocks. See WooCommerce’s Checkout block express checkout documentation.

PayPal Payments documents express buttons for the Block Cart and Block Express Checkout. Its “Proceed to PayPal” flow does not support vaulting or tokenization, and that button is hidden when a subscription product is in the cart. Check the current PayPal Payments documentation for the specific button and checkout combination you use.

With Stripe, logged-in customers can save payment methods during checkout or manage them under My Account > Payment Methods. The extension says it uses tokenization: full card details are not stored directly on the WooCommerce site. See the Stripe extension documentation for its saved-method details and setup.

Stripe’s Optimized Checkout Suite and standard checkout experience are distinct configuration choices. If your aim is simply to make a later purchase faster, check that saved payment methods are enabled and that the experience selected for your store supports the payment flow you intend to offer. Stripe’s extension documentation covers the available checkout experience and saved-method settings.
