To put the result in a live stream, build it in streaming software such as OBS, or send the OBS scene to another app through OBS Virtual Camera.
How a virtual background works
In a camera image, software distinguishes the foreground—usually the person—from the background. It then blurs, hides, or replaces the background. A chroma-key setup does this by removing a chosen solid color, typically green, from a physical screen. Software background removal instead tries to identify the subject without a dedicated screen.

The finished image can be part of the scene you stream from OBS, or OBS can present that scene as a virtual webcam to an app that accepts a camera input. The effect is not the same as making a prerecorded video appear live: it modifies a camera scene.

Do you need a green screen?
No. A physical green screen is optional if your camera app or streaming setup supports software background removal. The two approaches have different trade-offs, and no one method is best on every device.

For either method, lighting, contrast, camera quality, and the effect’s device requirements affect the result. Zoom notes that a higher-quality camera can improve a virtual background. Its guidance also warns that administrators may disable or restrict virtual backgrounds, and that video backgrounds and no-green-screen effects require more system resources.
Set up a virtual background in OBS with a green screen
- Add the camera: In OBS, create or select a scene, then add a Video Capture Source for your webcam.
- Add the key: Select the camera source, open its filters, and add a Chroma Key filter. Choose the screen color and adjust the key until the screen is removed without cutting into your outline.
- Place the background behind you: Add an image, video, or other scene layer and position it below the camera source in the source list. The keyed area should reveal that layer.
- Check the composition: Look for green spill, gaps around your hair or shoulders, and shadows or wrinkles that remain in the keyed area. Adjust lighting, framing, and filter settings, then inspect the scene preview before streaming.
A solid-colored screen, curtain, or wall can work; buying a screen is not mandatory if you already have a suitable surface. Zoom recommends uniform lighting and a bright, distinct screen color, and advises against clothing that matches the virtual background. Illuminate yourself evenly and avoid casting shadows on the screen.

Use software background removal in OBS
If your software and device support segmentation, you can use the effect instead of a physical screen. Support depends on the particular feature and hardware; check current compatibility rather than assuming an effect will work on every computer.
NVIDIA announced native integration of NVIDIA Broadcast virtual-background and room-echo effects in OBS 28.0, describing the background effect as not requiring a physical green screen and specifying GeForce RTX streamers. NVIDIA’s setup guidance says to add a Video Capture Source in OBS and choose Camera (NVIDIA Broadcast). These are version- and hardware-specific instructions, not a guarantee of current compatibility for every setup.

With no screen, keep the subject well lit and provide some even light on the background where practical. Inspect edges in the OBS preview: hair, motion, low contrast, and a busy background can make separation more difficult.
Send an OBS scene to another app with OBS Virtual Camera
- Build and check the scene in OBS, including the virtual background.
- Choose the Virtual Camera output you intend to send. Program is the normal output. In Studio Mode, Preview sends the preview scene, so edits can appear before you transition to Program. Scene and Source can lock the output to a particular scene or source.
- In the OBS Controls dock, click Start Virtual Camera.
- In the receiving app’s camera settings, select OBS Virtual Camera. Confirm the app is showing the intended scene before starting your call or stream.
If the receiving app does not show OBS Virtual Camera, confirm that Virtual Camera is running and that the app is looking at the correct camera setting. If the wrong OBS scene appears, check the selected output mode and whether Studio Mode is sending Preview or Program.

Use Zoom’s built-in virtual background
On Zoom desktop, open Settings, then Video & effects, then Virtual backgrounds. Choose an included image, upload an image or video, choose Blur, or select None. During a meeting, you can open the same settings from the arrow beside Video. Labels and availability can vary as Zoom updates its app.

- Video background: Zoom documents MP4 or MOV, with supported dimensions from 480×360 through 1920×1080.
- Effect unavailable or poor: Check device and app requirements, whether an administrator has restricted the feature, and whether lighting and contrast are adequate. Zoom notes that video backgrounds and no-green-screen effects can require more system resources.
Check the scene before you go live
- Confirm the intended background is visible and the camera source is above it in the OBS source order.
- Look at the edges around hair, shoulders, and moving hands for holes, halos, or color spill.
- Check that your clothes do not blend into the keyed color or virtual background.
- In OBS Studio Mode, verify whether Virtual Camera is sending Preview or Program so unfinished edits do not appear unexpectedly.
- Confirm the receiving app is using the intended camera. Keep any platform-specific streaming and content rules in mind; a background effect does not grant rights to images, video, or music you use.
Troubleshooting common problems
