Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a quick game or app clip on a Windows 10 or 11 PC, start with Xbox Game Bar. Choose OBS Studio if you need more control over sources and recording settings, and use its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. Bandicam is another option, but check its requirements against your PC before installing. None is proven to be the fastest on every low-end computer: recording load depends on the hardware, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and what is on screen.
Choose based on what you need to record
| Recorder | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Game Bar | Simple clips of a game or app on Windows 10 or 11 | Built into Windows and quick to use; its simplicity is not evidence that it uses the least resources. |
| OBS Studio | More control over capture sources, scenes, and recording settings | Flexible, but configuration and scene complexity affect the workload. Meeting its minimum requirements does not guarantee a particular recording will work smoothly. |
| Bandicam | A commercial recorder to consider after checking system requirements | Its published requirements are vendor specifications, not comparative performance results. |
There are no controlled side-by-side low-spec PC results here that establish a universal performance winner. A recorder that works well for a short, modest-resolution clip may struggle with a demanding game, high frame rate, or complex scene on the same machine.

Use Xbox Game Bar for a quick Windows clip
- Open the game or app you want to capture.
- Press Win+Alt+R to start recording. Press the same shortcut to stop.
- Find the resulting MP4 in VideosCaptures.
Microsoft documents this as a built-in recording path for Windows 10 and 11. If the target app does not work with this workflow, or you need more control over capture, try OBS Studio instead.

- Install OBS Studio and open the Auto-Configuration Wizard to establish a starting configuration.
- Choose a conservative output resolution and frame rate if recording stutters. Lowering either reduces the amount of work involved, though the result will have less detail or motion smoothness.
- Use the simplest scene that meets your needs. Extra sources and overlays add scene complexity, which can increase CPU requirements.
- Check which encoder is selected. CPU requirements vary with the chosen encoder as well as resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. If your GPU offers hardware encoding, check whether OBS can use it; results depend on your hardware and configuration.
- Record a short sample of the actual game or app, then review it for stutter, dropped frames, and audio issues before making a longer recording.
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU in its basic Windows requirements. Those are compatibility requirements, not a guarantee of smooth recording. OBS cautions that “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” See the OBS system requirements and its GPU selection guide.

Check Bandicam’s requirements before choosing it
Bandicam’s published minimum requirements list a dual-core processor or better and 4 GB RAM. Its recommended configuration lists at least 20 GB of storage and an SSD. These are Bandicam’s vendor-published requirements, not evidence that it performs better than OBS or Game Bar. Check the requirements for the version you plan to install against your PC’s specifications. Bandicam also suggests lowering resolution or trying windowed mode to reduce lag where suitable. See its system requirements and recording tips.
Reduce recording lag systematically
- Lower the recording resolution or frame rate. Try one change at a time and make a new short sample so you can tell whether it helped.
- Simplify the capture. Remove overlays and unnecessary OBS sources, or record a window rather than a demanding full-screen workload if that works for the app.
- Check GPU assignment on laptops. A laptop may have integrated and discrete graphics. OBS warns that running OBS and the game on different GPUs can cause capture or performance problems. In Windows graphics settings, check the GPU assignment for both applications and configure them appropriately.
- Confirm storage space and the recording destination. A full or unsuitable drive can disrupt saving. An SSD may help with storage access, but it does not fix an overloaded CPU or make unsupported hardware encoding available.
- Test the real workload. A quiet desktop capture is not a reliable substitute for testing while the target game or app is running.
What to check before installing
- Your task: A short game or app clip has different needs from a long tutorial or a recording built from several layered sources.
- Capture control: Game Bar offers a simpler built-in workflow; OBS offers configurable sources and scenes.
- Encoding: Check whether your integrated or discrete GPU has a usable hardware encoder and whether the chosen recorder supports it.
- Workload: Resolution, frame rate, overlays, scene complexity, and the demands of the captured app all matter.
- Compatibility: Check your Windows version, graphics support, GPU assignment, and any restrictions imposed by the game or app.
- Storage: Check available space and the destination drive, but do not treat an SSD as a fix for encoding overload.
Or let it run in the cloud
