For most YouTube creators who want free software and control over their setup, OBS Studio is the stronger default. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you value a guided setup with integrated alerts, overlays, and widgets—and are willing to consider its optional paid Ultra plan for features such as multistreaming. Neither is a proven performance winner: there is no controlled, current head-to-head benchmark here that establishes which app uses fewer resources on the same computer and scene.

Which one should you choose?
Choose OBS Studio for control, flexibility, or Linux
OBS is a good fit if you want to assemble scenes from individual sources, tune audio and transitions, and expand the app with plugins or scripts. Its documented tools include Studio Mode, Multiview, hotkeys, and per-source audio filters such as noise gate and noise suppression. The OBS homepage lists Windows 10/11, macOS 13.0 or newer, and Linux; if you use Linux, that official platform listing makes OBS the clear choice between these two.

Choose Streamlabs Desktop for integrated creator tools
Streamlabs is worth considering if you want alerts, widgets, themes, and overlays within one application and prefer a guided initial setup. Its getting-started flow includes account sign-in, an option to import OBS settings, theme selection, and a choice between the free Starter experience and paid Ultra. That workflow may suit creators who prefer built-in tools, but it is not evidence of a measured ease-of-use advantage.

Consider Ultra only if its extras matter to you
Streamlabs says basic features are free and Ultra is optional; multistreaming, VIP support, and premium overlays are among the benefits it describes. Multistreaming requires Ultra. What each app lets you do on YouTube
OBS Studio

Its scene system combines sources such as windows, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards. You can use custom transitions, an audio mixer with per-source filters, hotkeys, Studio Mode, and Multiview; plugins and scripts offer further customization. See OBS features and downloads.
Streamlabs Desktop

Will OBS or Streamlabs run better on your computer?
There is no reliable universal answer. The available product information does not provide a controlled benchmark comparing the two applications on the same machine, with the same scene, sources, and output settings. A complex scene with multiple sources, browser elements, filters, and animated overlays can behave differently from a simple camera-and-screen layout, so claims that one app is always lighter, faster, or more reliable are not established.

Run a private or unlisted YouTube test, watch for dropped frames and audio issues, and check CPU, memory, and GPU use while the scene is active. Keep resolution, frame rate, sources, and effects comparable when testing both. Streamlabs’ system-requirements guidance lists 8 GB RAM as a minimum and 16 GB or more as recommended, alongside processor, graphics, and storage guidance; these are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee that every workload will perform acceptably. - Want built-in alerts, overlays, and widgets: try Streamlabs’ free features and decide whether its integrated workflow suits you.

When desktop streaming software is not the right fit
OBS and Streamlabs are desktop tools for creators who want to produce a live broadcast with scenes and sources. If your goal is different—keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube around the clock—you do not need a streaming app running on a home computer. StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube, not a camera-based broadcast or a replacement for scene-based desktop production.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or current plans. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
