A video streaming box is a device that connects to your TV and the internet so you can watch online video through supported apps. The name usually refers to a small box-shaped player, but HDMI streaming sticks do the same job; streaming player is the broader term.
What does a video streaming box do?
The player connects to a television and uses an internet connection to run apps for video services. For example, Roku describes its Streaming Stick 4K as connecting to a TV’s HDMI port and the internet to stream movies and shows. Despite the product name, it is a stick-shaped streaming player rather than a box.
A streaming player is hardware; a streaming service is the content provider. Netflix, for example, is a subscription-based service that runs on supported internet-connected devices, including streaming media players. Buying a player does not mean that Netflix or another paid service is included.
What do you need to set one up?
Requirements differ by device. In general, check that you have the connections and access needed for the specific model:

- A compatible TV connection: Many players connect through HDMI, so check that the TV has an available, compatible HDMI port.
- Internet access: Streaming apps need an internet connection.
- Power: The player may need an electrical outlet or another power source specified by its maker.
- Accounts or companion devices: Some setups require an account or a compatible phone or tablet. For Google TV streaming devices, Google lists an HDMI-equipped TV, internet, a Google Account, a nearby electrical outlet, and a compatible mobile device as requirements. These are Google’s requirements and should not be assumed to apply to every brand.
Which apps and shows can you watch?
App access depends on the player, region, and time. Roku offers apps through its Streaming Store and notes that some apps are free, while others are paid or require a subscription. Check that the apps you want are supported on the particular device before buying it.
Even when an app is available, access to its shows may require a separate subscription or purchase. The device provides a way to run supported apps; it does not automatically provide every service’s content.

Do you need a separate streaming player?
Not necessarily. Smart TVs and some other equipment—including cable boxes, Blu-ray players, and game consoles—can offer streaming apps. If your current TV or connected equipment already supports the apps and interface you want, you may not need another device.
Before choosing an external player, check the apps you need, your TV’s connections, the setup and account requirements, and whether the services you plan to watch cost extra.
