A USB data blocker is a small adapter that sits between a USB power source and your device. It is designed to allow charging while blocking data transfer over that USB connection—useful when you are considering an unfamiliar public charging port.

What a USB data blocker does

USB can carry power and data through the same connection. USB Power Delivery likewise supports power and data over one connection, according to the USB Implementers Forum. A data blocker, also called a charge-only USB adapter, is intended to interrupt the data path while leaving power available for charging. Some educational guidance also uses the informal nickname “USB condom.”

The blocker works at the connection: it is intended to prevent data exchange through the USB link between the charging source and your device. It is not a general-purpose security device and should not be treated as protection against every form of device compromise, unsafe electrical condition, wireless threat, or faulty accessory.

When you might use one

A data blocker is relevant when you want to charge from a USB port you do not control, such as a public charging terminal. The University of Colorado Anschutz Information Security recommends using a data blocker or charge-only adapter between a device and a public terminal to prevent data transfer over that connection: Protect Your Device When Traveling.

Alternatives to an inline blocker

Option How it avoids a direct public USB connection What to check
AC outlet, your own USB power adapter and cable Power comes from the outlet through your own adapter rather than a public USB port; this is an alternative recommended by the University of Colorado Anschutz guidance. Bring a compatible adapter and cable.
Charge-only USB cable The cable is designed to allow charging while blocking data. Plugable describes this function for its USB-C cables in vendor guidance updated August 21, 2025: How secure are charge-only USB-C cables against juice jacking? Confirm the connector and charging capabilities suit your device; the vendor description is not an independent product test.
Power bank charged from a trusted source Charge from the battery pack instead of connecting directly to a public USB charging point. The University of Colorado recommends a battery pack as a travel option: Stay Cybersecure While Traveling: Avoid Public USB Charging Risks. Keep the power bank charged and use a cable compatible with your device.
Inline USB data blocker Placed between the USB source and device, it is designed to allow power while blocking data transfer. Check connector type and stated charging support for both the source and device.

What to check before choosing one

  • Connector fit: Match the accessory to the ports on your device and the power source.
  • Charging support: Do not assume every blocker or charge-only cable supports every device or charging mode. USB Power Delivery can carry power and data together, and the cited vendor describes charge-only USB-C cables; those facts do not establish universal compatibility.
  • Your charging situation: If you can use an AC outlet with your own USB power adapter, or a power bank charged from a trusted source, you can avoid connecting directly to a public USB port.

The purpose of a USB data blocker is specific: reduce the risk of data exchange through a USB connection while charging. The cited sources do not provide controlled comparisons, charging-speed measurements, or product-effectiveness tests, so choose based on the connection and charging capabilities you need rather than assuming a particular model offers a broader security guarantee.
