What Is a Speaker on a Chip? Definition and How It Works

A speaker on a chip usually refers to a MEMS microspeaker, a miniature device that turns electrical signals into sound. The phrase can also describe audio-processing circuitry paired with a separate speaker.

A “speaker on a chip” most often means a tiny MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) speaker: a miniature sound-producing device whose moving parts are made using microscale fabrication. An electrical signal makes an actuator move a diaphragm, which pushes air to create sound. The phrase can also mean an audio-processing chip that handles functions such as decoding and amplification while a separate speaker produces the sound.

What a MEMS speaker contains

A MEMS speaker is the sound-producing component itself, not just an audio chip connected to a speaker. A peer-reviewed overview describes its general structure as “an acoustic diaphragm, an actuation mechanism, and an air chamber.” The actuator moves the diaphragm; the diaphragm’s vibration creates sound pressure in the surrounding air.

The precise construction depends on the design. Broadly, MEMS speakers use one of four approaches:

  • Piezoelectric: an electrical field makes a material deform and move the diaphragm.
  • Electrodynamic: electromagnetic force drives the moving structure.
  • Electrostatic: electrostatic force moves the diaphragm.
  • Thermoacoustic: periodic heating and expansion of nearby air generates sound rather than relying on a vibrating diaphragm.

In one silicon-speaker approach described by xMEMS, a thin-film piezoelectric actuator takes the place of a conventional coil and magnet, and a silicon diaphragm replaces more common plastic or paper diaphragms. That describes the company’s design, not every MEMS speaker. xMEMS’ explanation of silicon speakers

Why the phrase can mean something else

“Speaker on a chip” is not a strictly standardized term. It has also been used for an integrated audio-electronics chip that combines functions such as a voice processor, audio codec, and amplifier. For example, a 2009 Design News report used “Speakers-on-a-Chip” for Conexant’s CX20562. A chip that processes or amplifies audio does not necessarily contain the diaphragm or other parts that physically produce sound. Design News’ 2009 report

In modern personal-audio discussions, the MEMS-driver meaning is usually the relevant one. If a product description uses the phrase, check whether it is naming a sound-producing transducer or audio-processing electronics.

Where MEMS speakers are used—and what to compare

Research reviews identify hearing instruments, portable electronics, and Internet of Things devices as potential applications. Small size, batch fabrication, ease of assembly, low-power operation, and possible integration with electronics are design motivations—not guaranteed benefits in every finished product. Actual performance depends on the speaker’s architecture and the device around it. The peer-reviewed review of recent MEMS speaker development also discusses continuing engineering challenges, including sound pressure level and practical performance.

When comparing a MEMS speaker with a conventional miniature driver, consider the complete implementation rather than the label:

  • Sound pressure level: how much acoustic output it can deliver in the intended device.
  • Power and drive needs: what electronics are required to operate it.
  • Size and integration: the component’s footprint and how it fits into the product.
  • System configuration: whether it works alone or alongside a conventional driver.

A February 2025 SoundStage! Solo article identified Creative Aurvana Ace Mimi earphones as an example using xMEMS drivers. It described contemporary earphone implementations as often pairing a MEMS driver with a dynamic driver, in part reflecting bass-performance concerns at the time. That example does not establish a limitation for every MEMS speaker or the model’s current availability. SoundStage! Solo’s MEMS overview

Definition in one sentence

In its common modern personal-audio sense, a speaker on a chip is a MEMS microspeaker that uses microscale components to turn an electrical signal into sound; in another usage, it is an audio-processing chip that still relies on a separate speaker.
