A Spatial Reality Display is Sony’s glasses-free 3D display technology and product family. It tracks a viewer’s eye position and renders separate images for the left and right eyes, creating stereoscopic depth that shifts as the viewer moves—within the display’s viewing limits. It is a screen-based 3D effect, not a physical hologram or an object placed in the room.
What the name means
“Spatial Reality Display” is Sony’s name for a specific display family and technology, not a general term for every spatial-computing screen. Sony positions the displays for professional 3D visualization, creation and presentation. The company introduced the underlying approach as Eye-Sensing Light Field Display technology in its 2020 launch announcement.

The effect is stereoscopic: each eye receives a different view, and the brain combines them into an impression of depth. The viewpoint can respond to the viewer’s movement, but the image remains on the display; it is not a literal hologram floating in the room.
How the display creates depth
Sony describes a three-part process: eye sensing, real-time rendering and optical delivery of the two views. Its Spatial Reality Display developer site and ELF-SR1 white paper explain the approach.

- Eye-position sensing: Sensors detect where the viewer’s eyes are.
- View generation: The system uses those positions to render views from 3D computer graphics in real time.
- Optical separation: A micro-optical lens directs the left-eye image to the left eye and the right-eye image to the right eye.
As a result, a viewer can perceive depth without special glasses or a headset, and the perspective can change as the viewer moves. This experience depends on the viewer staying within the display’s supported viewing zone; it should not be read as a claim that the display works from every angle or for an unlimited number of viewers.
ELF-SR1: one example, not a family-wide specification
The Sony ELF-SR1 is a specific Spatial Reality Display model. Sony lists these specifications for that model on its product page:

| ELF-SR1 specification | Value |
|---|---|
| Panel size | 15.6 inches diagonal |
| 2D resolution | 3840 × 2160 pixels |
| Typical brightness | 500 nits |
| Interfaces | HDMI 2.0 and USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C |
| Weight | Approximately 4.6 kg |
Sony’s white paper describes the ELF-SR1 as a 15.6-inch 4K LCD. In its 3D mode, each eye receives an independent view using about half of the panel pixels. That model-specific detail helps explain why the listed 2D resolution alone does not describe the complete 3D viewing experience. Do not assume these specifications apply to the ELF-SR2 or every product in Sony’s range.

Sony’s developer materials identify Unity and Unreal Engine workflows. They also show why it is important to check support for the exact model and software release: the developer site listed Spatial Reality Display Settings Installer 2.6.0 and UE Plugin 2.6.0 releases dated 2026-02-27. For current compatibility, releases and requirements, consult the developer site rather than treating older setup recommendations as universal.

The clearest distinction is that Sony’s display aims to provide stereoscopic 3D without requiring the viewer to wear glasses or a headset. Other approaches may rely on glasses or a head-mounted display, or may use different techniques to present depth. The useful comparison depends on the intended job, not just on the label “3D.”

What to check before choosing or setting one up
- Identify the exact model; ELF-SR1 specifications should not be applied to ELF-SR2.
- Confirm current software, plugin and operating-system compatibility for that model on Sony’s developer site.
- Check the current computer requirements for the intended software and workflow. Sony’s ELF-SR1 white-paper recommendations are tied to that model and its described software context, not necessarily to later models or releases.
- Consider whether the viewer position and viewing zone suit the way the display will be used.
- Confirm regional availability and current product details with Sony, since listings and specifications may change.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
