A small agent-loop profiling harness can show where time is being spent—but Dakota Lin’s example does not prove that prompt rebuilding is slower than real model inference. Its rebuild routine deliberately repeats work, and its model call is a fixed 40-millisecond sleep. The useful takeaway is how to instrument and compare loop phases, not a production performance result.
What the harness measures
Lin’s example records four named spans for each loop round: serialization, tool execution, prompt rebuilding, and the model call. It also records prompt character count and writes one CSV row per round. That separation helps show which phase changes as the loop accumulates history; a single end-to-end timer would conceal that breakdown.

The example constructs a tool response, serializes it, appends the serialized output to conversation history, rebuilds a prompt, calls a model function, and records the timings. In the displayed harness, the tool stub sleeps for 5 milliseconds, creates 50 file entries with 2,000-character previews each, and adds a log string. These are synthetic inputs and settings, not measurements of typical tool behavior.
Why the rebuild dominates in this example
The rebuild function appends the tool output and then loops through every prefix of the accumulated history, joining each prefix into a new prompt string. It overwrites the intermediate result each time; only the final joined prompt is sent to the model. Reconstructing and discarding those strings creates redundant copying as the history grows.

Lin explicitly describes this as intentional: “The quadratic join is a microscope, not advice.” It illustrates one inefficient implementation, not how every agent framework assembles prompts. To test the effect, replace the repeated-prefix loop with one join and compare the two versions on the same machine with the same payload and workload.
Why the model timing is not model latency
The harness’s model stub sleeps for 0.040 seconds regardless of prompt length, then reads the prompt length. Lin calls it “a ruler, not a benchmark” and says, “Please do not quote it as model speed.” The sleep supplies a fixed reference interval so the harness has a model-call-shaped span; it does not measure inference.

The post shows an illustrative chart, but publishes no measured per-round CSV values. It reports no sample size, production baseline, percentile, or benchmark result. Lin calls it “a lab note, not a customer war story” and says, “I did not harvest production traces for this.” The code’s 12-round example, 5-millisecond tool sleep, 40-millisecond model sleep, and synthetic payload settings are harness choices—not observed performance statistics.

Compare named spans across rounds
Use the CSV to inspect serialization, tool, rebuild, and model-call times round by round, alongside prompt character count. This can reveal which measured phase grows as history accumulates. It does not by itself explain why a phase grows or establish that the pattern will hold for a different implementation or workload.

Compare repeated joins with one join
Run the original rebuild and a single-join version with the same input history, payload, machine, and other conditions. Compare corresponding span timings rather than changing several factors at once. Lin recommends changing payload size and workload for a useful local experiment; the sample constants are not universal inputs.
Use cProfile after locating a slow phase
Named spans identify a broad phase; Python’s cProfile can help find function-level contributors within it. Lin notes that json.dumps may stand out in this deliberately large-payload example. Profiling adds overhead, so treat its measurements cautiously rather than assuming it leaves runtime unchanged.

What changes with a remote model endpoint
Lin’s remote example posts the prompt to a caller-supplied HTTP URL and measures elapsed round-trip time. Keeping the same span names makes the client-side loop breakdown easier to compare, but the model-call interval then includes network effects and shared-server queueing. The first request can also be affected by DNS and TLS setup.

Without server-side traces, that client interval cannot isolate inference time from network and queue delays. If the goal is to attribute latency to inference, use server-side tracing as well. The post says its harness does not stream tokens and cannot on its own address streaming behavior, GPU kernel stalls, or tokenizer behavior.
