A sneaker bot is software that automates some or all of the steps involved in trying to buy a limited-release sneaker online. It may monitor for a release, start checkout tasks, fill saved purchase details, and submit purchase attempts. A bot does not guarantee a pair: retailers defend launches, and demand can exceed supply.
How sneaker bots work
At a high level, a sneaker bot automates parts of an online release purchase that a person might otherwise perform manually. The exact workflow depends on the software and retailer, but it can include:

- Watching for a release: The software monitors a product or launch page for a selected sneaker.
- Starting checkout tasks: When a release becomes available, it can initiate one or more attempts to buy the selected item.
- Submitting stored details: Some tools can enter saved checkout information as part of the purchase attempt.
- Handling site friction: Some bot stacks advertise proxies or CAPTCHA-related features. Their availability and behavior vary by tool and store.
These are general mechanics described by commercial explainers, not proof that any particular bot works, is compatible with a retailer, or has a measurable chance of success. This overview explains the process without giving instructions for disguising traffic, creating fake accounts, bypassing queues, or defeating retailer controls.

Limited releases can attract more buyers than there are pairs available. Nike says that supply and high demand help explain why an individual buyer may not get a pair, even when the buyer makes a genuine attempt. Losing a launch does not, on its own, show that a bot bought the pair.

Nike’s official SNKRS bot-protection explainer, which displays no publication date, says that bot attacks can account for “about 10%-50% of all entries,” depending on launch popularity, and that Nike stops “as many as 12 billion bot calls” attempting to game SNKRS launches globally each month. Those are Nike’s estimates, not independently verified measurements presented here. They concern SNKRS and should not be treated as figures for every sneaker retailer.
How retailers defend launches
Nike says SNKRS uses analytics and machine learning to validate users and entries. It describes real-time and retrospective launch reviews and engineers focused on dismantling bots. Nike also acknowledges that bot techniques evolve and that a small fraction of bot entries may still succeed. These are Nike’s descriptions of its own SNKRS defenses; other retailers may use different systems.

Nike defines bots as “automated programs that fake real consumer activity, primarily to join launches and purchase products with the intent to resell.” The company says its aim is to get popular products to real fans. Detection and launch decisions do not remove the underlying scarcity when more people want a release than there are pairs to sell.
Do sneaker bots really work?
They can automate attempts, but that is not the same as securing a purchase. Retailer defenses can identify and remove automated entries, and a release can sell out because demand exceeds supply. Nike says a small fraction of bot entries may still succeed on SNKRS, but that statement is not a success rate for any bot product or a guarantee for a buyer.

There is no well-supported current ranking of sneaker-bot vendors in the sources considered here. Vendor claims about compatibility or performance should not be mistaken for independent evidence, and older market guides may not reflect current products, prices, or retailer defenses.
Are sneaker bots legal?
There is no responsible one-word answer that applies to every bot, retailer, and jurisdiction. Retailer terms may restrict automated purchasing, so read the rules that apply to the store and launch you plan to use, and consult local law if the legal consequences matter to you.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s BOTS Act guidance is specifically about tickets for covered public events. The FTC says, “The BOTS Act prohibits people from circumventing a ticket issuer’s security measures or purchasing rules.” That ticket-focused law is not a general ruling that sneaker bots are legal or illegal.

CAPTCHA safety: recognize fake instructions
A real CAPTCHA asks you to complete an image- or text-based task to establish that you are human. The FTC warned in a June 2026 consumer alert that a fake CAPTCHA may instead tell you to open a system dialog, paste text, and press Enter. Following those directions can install malware and expose credentials. The FTC’s warning is about deceptive prompts that ask you to run commands; it does not mean ordinary retailer CAPTCHAs are malware.
