If a web clipper’s PDF loses or distorts Indian-language text, first compare the same passage on the webpage and in the exported PDF. That separates a page or browser-rendering problem from one introduced during clipping, conversion, or PDF viewing—but it does not identify the cause by itself. Then pin down the symptom and change one capture or conversion setting at a time.
Identify what “cut off” looks like
Different failures point toward different parts of the capture and display path. Save a short passage that shows the problem and classify it before changing settings.

- Text is absent: the clipper may not have captured the relevant page content, or the page may not have finished loading it.
- Characters appear as boxes: font availability or embedding is one possibility. It is not a diagnosis on its own.
- Glyphs look incomplete or incorrectly shaped: the browser, clipper, conversion engine, or viewer may not be handling the script’s shaping correctly.
- Text is cut at a page, column, or container edge: investigate clipping boundaries, layout, scaling, and scrollable content.
- Text looks right but cannot be selected or searched: the export may be image-based rather than text-based.
Record the language and script, affected webpage, browser and operating system, clipper name and version, capture mode, PDF viewer, and whether another page reproduces the failure. These details help distinguish a site-specific issue from one affecting every export.
Compare the webpage with the PDF
- Open the original page in the same browser used for clipping.
- Compare the exact passage—not just the general appearance—with the PDF.
- If the webpage is already wrong, investigate its content and the fonts available to the browser first.
- If the webpage is correct but the PDF is not, retry the export and open the result in a second PDF viewer. Focus next on the clipper’s capture path, conversion settings, and PDF rendering.
This comparison is a useful diagnostic, not a conclusive test: more than one part of the pipeline can contribute to the same symptom. Evernote’s clipping guidance and Adobe’s web-page conversion documentation describe different capture and conversion controls, rather than establishing one universal cause (Evernote clipping guidance; Adobe web-page conversion guidance).

Try another capture mode
If the webpage itself displays correctly, test whether the problem follows a particular clip mode. Where your clipper offers equivalent controls, try these separately and compare each resulting PDF with the original:
- Choose a different clip type.
- Select the passage or content area manually rather than capturing the whole page.
- Use screenshot capture as a diagnostic alternative.
These are options Evernote recommends for incorrectly clipped pages; other clippers may not have the same controls (Evernote clipping guidance). Screenshot capture can preserve how text looks, but the result may no longer contain selectable or searchable text. It is therefore a visual workaround, not an equivalent text-based PDF export.
Check script shaping and fonts
When Devanagari is affected
Devanagari rendering can involve more than displaying isolated character shapes. The W3C Internationalization Working Group’s Group Draft Note on Devanagari describes consonant clusters joined through virama and resulting conjunct forms. A font may appear to cover individual characters while a particular browser-to-PDF path still fails to render a shaped sequence correctly. The document is a work in progress focused on Devanagari, including Hindi and Marathi; it should not be treated as a technical account of every Indian script or every PDF engine (W3C Devanagari Layout Requirements, published 2024-07-09).

If the PDF viewer shows boxes instead of characters, inspect the PDF’s font properties if the viewer provides that information. Printster’s Hindi PDF guidance identifies missing embedded Indic fonts as one possible reason for box glyphs and discusses font embedding in authoring and export workflows. That is a diagnostic possibility, not proof that missing fonts cause every case of clipped or malformed text (Printster’s Hindi PDF guidance). If the PDF looks different in another viewer, note that result too; a viewer can affect what you see.

Review conversion settings when using Adobe Acrobat
Adobe documents specific controls for its web-page-to-PDF conversion flow. They do not necessarily exist in browser-native printing or an unnamed web clipper. If Acrobat is your converter, preserve the first PDF and change one relevant setting at a time:
- Input encoding: check the encoding used to interpret the web page.
- Language-specific font settings: review the script and font options available for the conversion.
- Scrollable blocks: test expanding scrollable content if text is inside a scrolling region.
- Page layout: check page size and orientation.
- Scaling: test fitting wide content to the page if text is clipped at an edge.
After each change, compare the affected passage and page layout with the original export. Adobe’s settings are specific to its documented conversion flow (Adobe web-page conversion guidance).

If the failure persists, send the clipper’s support team enough information to reproduce it: the page URL, a short affected passage, the original page and exported PDF, the exact steps and capture mode, plus your clipper version, browser, operating system, and PDF viewer.
If you use Joplin, check its extension-specific connection before treating the problem as a font defect. Joplin documents that its Web Clipper extension communicates with a service started by the desktop app; its troubleshooting guidance includes checking that the service is running, considering firewall or proxy interference, and using browser-console debugging steps in Chrome or Firefox. These checks apply to Joplin’s extension/service setup, not to web clippers generally (Joplin Web Clipper documentation).
