To monitor changes to terms and conditions, save a dated copy of the exact terms page you rely on, then use a page-change monitor or public archive to capture later versions and compare them. Record both the provider’s stated effective date and your own capture date. Start by identifying the right terms
Before setting alerts, make sure you are tracking the document that applies to the service and relationship you care about. A company may publish separate terms for different products, audiences, or jurisdictions, alongside privacy policies, acceptable-use rules, or data-processing agreements.

- Record the service name, policy title, and exact URL.

- List related policies or service-specific terms that may also affect your relationship.
If the provider offers multiple versions, do not assume a general terms page is the one that governs a particular product or account.

Save the version visible now before relying on future alerts. Keep the page URL, the date you retrieved it, and enough surrounding context to identify the service and policy. A saved copy, export, or archive capture gives you something identifiable to compare with a later version; a single capture alone cannot show when a particular clause was added.

Keep two dates distinct: the date you or a service retrieved the wording, and any effective date the provider states for that version. They answer different questions. A monitor’s capture date does not prove when a change took effect.
Choose a monitoring method

- Ahrefs Website Change Monitor describes a free way to view past changes for one page using its crawl history for the prior year, and a separate Firehose product for future monitoring and alerts across more pages. These are descriptions from Ahrefs, not independent performance findings.
- SiteMonit describes selecting a legal-text block, scheduled checks, notifications, word-level diffs, and reporting blocked checks. Its guidance notes that access restrictions can limit monitoring.
- TOSTracker describes scheduled revisits, side-by-side comparisons, and submissions of detected changes to the Wayback Machine. Its coverage and revisit schedule are service claims that may change.

Set up recurring checks with less noise
- Choose the exact URL. Use the canonical terms page identified for your service, audience, and jurisdiction.
- Target the policy text. If the monitor supports selecting a page region or document body, use it rather than the full page. Navigation, cookie notices, and layout changes can otherwise create irrelevant alerts.
- Set a practical interval. Choose based on how quickly a change would matter, how many pages you track, and the monitor’s limits. There is no universally correct interval. SiteMonit describes hourly or daily checks as typical for its legal-page use case; that is vendor guidance, not a general requirement.
- Route alerts to a reviewer. Send notifications to an inbox or shared channel that someone actually checks. Keep the page’s version history or export the evidence if the tool offers that option.
- Check monitor health. A failed or blocked fetch is not evidence that the page remained unchanged. Review failures and, where needed, use another public source or take a manual capture.
Review an alert before treating it as important
Do not rely on an alert label or automated summary alone. Open both captured versions and verify they are the same document for the same service, audience, and jurisdiction. Then inspect the changed passage in context, including definitions and documents it references.
- Compare the complete old and new passages, not just a highlighted phrase.
- Check for extraction noise caused by page layout or formatting changes.
- Record the source URL, both capture dates, and any provider-stated effective date.
- Retain the diff or evidence packet along with the underlying versions.
If a change may affect payment, cancellation, data use, dispute procedures, or your obligations, preserve the material and seek qualified advice for the relevant jurisdiction and contract. A monitor can document text it captured; it cannot decide which terms you accepted or whether a clause is legally valid.

Coverage, reliability, and evidence limits
No monitoring method guarantees that every change will be captured. A change can occur between scheduled checks; a site can block a fetch; a monitor can capture the wrong policy version; or page extraction can produce misleading differences. Public archives cover the documents in their collections, not necessarily every service or every version.
Before relying on a tool for a business process, check its coverage, retention, export, and failure-reporting details. Keep an independent dated copy for especially consequential terms.
