Depending on its design, it may work with an existing deadbolt or replace it, and it may offer app control, a keypad, or smart-home integration. Those features can make entry easier to manage, but they do not by themselves prove that a lock is harder to break into. Whether one is a good upgrade depends on your door, preferred entry methods, connectivity needs, and comfort maintaining a connected device.
What a smart lock does
A smart lock accepts electronic credentials or controls in addition to, or instead of, a conventional key. Depending on the particular model and configuration, you might unlock it with a phone app, keypad code, fingerprint, smart-home platform, or physical key. No single feature is standard across the category, so check the exact model rather than assuming it supports every method.

There are two broad installation approaches. A retrofit lock fits over a compatible existing deadbolt, while a replacement lock takes the place of the existing hardware. For example, August says its Wi-Fi Smart Lock works with an existing single-cylinder deadbolt; Yale’s Assure Lock 2 is a product family with different configurations. Read the manufacturer’s compatibility details before choosing either style: August Wi-Fi Smart Lock and Yale Assure Lock 2.

Why households consider a smart lock
The main appeal is flexible access. Depending on the model, a lock may let you manage entry through an app, use keypad codes, see lock status or activity, set automatic locking, or connect with a smart-home system. These conveniences can help with day-to-day household access, but manufacturer feature descriptions are not comparative evidence that a smart lock prevents break-ins or is physically stronger than a conventional lock.

Are smart locks safe?
A smart lock is both a physical lock and, where connected, an internet-connected device. The available product descriptions and government guidance do not establish that smart locks reduce burglaries, resist physical attacks better than conventional locks, or share a single security rating. Treat convenience features and physical security as separate questions: assess the lock and door hardware for your needs, and secure any connected account, app, and home network.
The Federal Trade Commission’s advice for connected devices is general guidance, not a smart-lock certification or guarantee. It recommends changing default usernames and passwords, using unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication when offered, using available security features such as encryption or passcode lockout, keeping firmware and apps updated, and disabling remote-management features you do not use. See the FTC’s connected-device security guidance.

The FTC also recommends protecting the home router with encryption, unique administrator and Wi-Fi credentials, and current software. Its home Wi-Fi guidance explains those network basics. CISA likewise advises IoT device owners to change default passwords, review app permissions, secure their network, and keep devices updated; its IoT tip sheet discusses connected devices broadly, including home security.

- Check carefully first if you rent, have restrictions on changing door hardware, rely on a particular smart-home platform, or need entry to work when a phone, network, or connected service is unavailable.
- Do not buy on the word “smart” alone. Verify the exact model’s deadbolt fit, included access methods, required modules, integrations, and update process on the manufacturer’s current page.
