For most users, the strongest practical setup is to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on the TeamViewer account, allowlist only approved identities on unattended devices, and limit what incoming sessions can do. Add connection approval when someone is available to approve requests. Organizations that need centralized rules can use Tensor Conditional Access, subject to its licensing and rollout requirements.
Secure TeamViewer in this order
- Protect account sign-in: enable account 2FA for every TeamViewer account used to access devices.
- Restrict unattended access: on each unattended device, allow only approved TeamViewer accounts or IDs.
- Reduce session permissions: choose the least permissive incoming access setting that still supports the work.
- Add connection approval where practical: use connection 2FA on devices where a trusted person can respond, and enroll a backup approval device.
- For managed organizations: consider Tensor Conditional Access, testing the rules before activation.
These controls protect different parts of remote access; using one does not replace the others. TeamViewer’s security statement advises limiting functionality to the features actually needed to mitigate risks from potential breaches or attacks (TeamViewer Security Statement).

Protect TeamViewer account sign-in with 2FA
Account 2FA protects the TeamViewer account sign-in. TeamViewer describes it as a time-based one-time code generated by an authenticator. It does not itself decide which identities may connect to a particular unattended device, nor does it approve each remote session. Pair it with device-level access restrictions when unattended access is enabled.

Allow only approved identities on unattended devices
An AllowList is the key device-level control for unattended access: it limits who can connect to that device. TeamViewer recommends combining Easy Access, an AllowList, and account 2FA. This reduces reliance on a password alone if one is lost or compromised.
Set an AllowList in TeamViewer Remote
- Open TeamViewer Remote and go to Settings → Security → Block and allowlist.
- Select Allow access only for the following partners.
- Choose Add, then add the approved TeamViewer accounts or IDs.
- Review the list whenever staff, devices, or access responsibilities change.
If you belong to a company profile, company-profile allowlisting is also available. TeamViewer says working with a company profile requires a Premium or Corporate license. The AllowList setting can optionally apply to meetings as well. The precise labels and availability can differ by product generation; see TeamViewer’s Blocklist and Allowlist instructions.
Use a Blocklist only for specific exclusions
The same area offers Deny access for the following partners to block named accounts or IDs. A Blocklist is not an alternative to an AllowList when the goal is to permit only selected people: it denies listed partners but does not stop the local user from initiating outgoing sessions with them.

Limit what incoming sessions can do
Restricting who can connect is different from restricting what an approved connection can do. In TeamViewer Classic, incoming access-control options include Full access, Confirm all, View and show, and Deny incoming remote-control sessions. Choose the narrowest option that meets the device’s purpose; labels and availability vary across TeamViewer generations. Consult TeamViewer’s access-control guidance for the Classic settings.
For a device that should not accept remote control at all, denying incoming remote-control sessions is the most direct choice among those Classic options. For a device that must accept support sessions, avoid leaving Full access enabled by default if a more limited mode or confirmation workflow will do the job.
Use connection 2FA when someone can approve access
Connection 2FA protects the session-approval step, not account sign-in. A connection attempt prompts an approval push on designated mobile devices. It is most useful when someone trustworthy can respond to requests; it can impede legitimate unattended access if nobody is available to approve.

TeamViewer’s Classic instructions specify minimum versions of 15.17 on Windows and 15.22 on macOS and Linux. Configure approval devices in the Security settings of a supported Classic client and check the version and operating system before following the path. See TeamViewer’s connection 2FA setup guide.

Enroll a backup approval device first
Before relying on connection 2FA, add another approval device. TeamViewer warns that connection 2FA cannot be disabled remotely if the enrolled approval device is unavailable, creating a recovery problem. Keep the backup device accessible to an authorized person and ensure the recovery process is understood before enabling the control.
Restrict incoming connections to the local network when appropriate
If a computer only needs remote access from within its local network, TeamViewer Classic guidance includes an option to allow only incoming LAN connections. That reduces the accepted network origins, but it is unsuitable when legitimate access must come from outside the local network. Check the device’s actual support needs before applying the restriction.

Use Tensor Conditional Access for organization-wide policy
Tensor Conditional Access is a separate enterprise tier for centrally scoped rules covering accounts, groups, and devices. Rules can define permissions, approvals, and time or expiry conditions. TeamViewer describes a rule as defining “who can connect where, when, and how” in its Conditional Access guide.
This is not a generally available toggle for every TeamViewer user. It requires an eligible activated Tensor license or add-on, client version 15.5 or higher, and dedicated-router setup. When verification is activated, connections are initially blocked unless allowed by the configured rules. That default makes rollout planning essential.

- Activate verification only after validation, then monitor for blocked legitimate connections and adjust policy as needed.
Choose controls by the risk they address
| Control | What it protects | When it fits | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account 2FA | TeamViewer account sign-in | All users with an account | Requires access to the configured authenticator |
| AllowList | Which identities can reach a device | Especially unattended access | Approved accounts or IDs must be maintained |
| Incoming access control | What an incoming remote session may do | Devices accepting incoming sessions | Options and labels vary by product generation |
| Connection 2FA | Approval of connections to a desktop | Devices where a trusted person can approve | Approval-device availability and recovery matter |
| LAN-only incoming access | Network origin of incoming connections | Devices that need access only within a local network | Blocks legitimate external access |
| Tensor Conditional Access | Organization-wide who, where, when, and how rules | Managed enterprise deployments | Eligible licensing, dedicated-router setup, and careful activation are required |
Check version, scope, and compliance before relying on a setting
TeamViewer documentation covers Remote, Classic, and Tensor, and a setting’s path or availability may depend on the client generation, version, operating system, and license. Verify those details on the device and organization you are configuring rather than assuming every interface has the same controls.
These settings can support security and compliance work, but no single TeamViewer configuration by itself guarantees security or establishes compliance with a standard such as HIPAA or PCI. Compliance depends on the broader implementation and organizational controls, as TeamViewer notes in its security statement.
