To control an iPhone by voice beyond ordinary Siri requests, turn on Voice Control in Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control. It lets you tap onscreen items, navigate, perform gestures and button presses, and dictate or edit text. You can use it without touching the screen, and you do not need a headset.
What Voice Control does
Voice Control is an iPhone Accessibility feature, not simply standard dictation. Apple describes it as a way to speak commands to interact with onscreen content, perform gestures and button presses, and dictate and edit text. Apple’s overview of speech accessibility features explains its place among iPhone accessibility tools.

It can be useful when hands-free interaction is needed or touching the screen is difficult. Commands depend on the current app and task, so the available actions may vary from one screen to another.
Set up Voice Control
- Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi for the initial setup.
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control.
- Tap Set Up Voice Control and follow the prompts to download and enable it.
- When setup is complete, the Voice Control icon in the status bar indicates that it is on.
Apple says an internet connection is not needed after the one-time download is complete. Voice Control is not available in all languages; consult Apple’s current device and regional availability rather than assuming it supports every language.

Use spoken commands to navigate and select items
Try commands such as “Open Control Center,” “Go home,” “Tap item name,” or “Turn up volume.” Replace “item name” with a visible control’s name when appropriate. If you are unsure which commands work in the current context, say “Show commands” or review Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control > Commands.
Make a hard-to-name target easier to select
- Say “Show numbers” to display numbered targets, then speak the number for the item you want.
- Say “Show grid” to target a location more precisely on the screen.
These overlays can help when a control has no obvious spoken name or when several items have similar labels. Apple also provides an interactive tutorial for learning Voice Control.

Dictate and edit text with Voice Control
Voice Control has its own text-entry modes. Dictation mode enters spoken words; Spelling mode enters characters where supported; and Command mode ignores words that are not recognized as commands. The mode matters: if you want to enter prose, use dictation rather than expecting a spoken phrase to be treated as a navigation command.
Standard iOS Dictation is unavailable while Voice Control is on. Voice Control’s own dictation mode is the text-entry option in that situation; it is not an extra layer on top of standard Dictation.

Pause, resume, or turn Voice Control off
Say “Stop listening” to pause Voice Control, then “Start listening” to resume. To turn it on or off another way, you can use Siri, add Voice Control to Control Center, or configure Accessibility Shortcut.
Configure the Accessibility Shortcut
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut.
- Select the accessibility feature or features you want the shortcut to control.
- Triple-click the side button or Home button to toggle the selected shortcut.
Apple also documents turning accessibility features on or off through Control Center when the relevant control has been added. The exact button used for the triple-click depends on the iPhone model.

Choose a microphone
The iPhone’s built-in microphone is sufficient to use Voice Control; an accessory is optional. If a Bluetooth headset or AirPods are connected, you can prefer the headset microphone. Apple warns that using a headset affects audio quality and features including Siri announcements and Share Audio with AirPods. Consider that tradeoff before choosing an external microphone.

Voice Control language support is not universal. Apple’s customization guidance lists English variants, German, Spanish variants, French, Japanese, and Chinese variants; availability can differ by device or region.
