It can be as simple as one connected thermostat or as integrated as several devices responding to shared schedules and sensor events; there is no universal minimum device count.
What does “smart home” mean?
There is no single universal definition. A practical one is a home in which connected devices and systems work together to monitor or control physical functions. The International Telecommunication Union’s summary of Recommendation J.1612 describes a smart home as “a kind of home automation system in which a wide range of IoT devices in a home cooperate to provide intelligent controlling and monitoring functions for home users.” ITU-T Recommendation J.1612 (January 2022)

For a device-level definition, NIST’s 2025 survey calls a smart home device a network-connected device—using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or similar technology—that lets people control home functions or physical aspects remotely, or more effectively and easily. NIST SP 1343 (December 2025)
In short, “smart” describes connected and sometimes coordinated home functions, not a particular brand, a single gadget, or a requirement that every device connect directly to the public internet.

Which devices can make up a smart home?
Common examples include smart speakers and voice assistants, thermostats, lights, cameras, video doorbells, locks, garage door openers, environmental sensors, plugs, televisions, and connected appliances. Depending on the device, it may report a condition, send an alert, accept a remote command, or trigger another action. NIST SP 1343 and NISTIR 8267 describe these types of consumer home IoT products.
- Control: Change a setting, such as a light’s state or a thermostat’s temperature, using an app or voice interface.
- Monitoring: Check information such as a sensor reading or camera feed.
- Alerts: Receive a notification when a device detects an event.
- Automation: Have devices act according to schedules, rules, or sensor input.
A home does not need every category—or any particular number of devices—to fit the practical definition.

How do smart home devices connect and coordinate?
Devices can use different communications technologies, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee. Some connect through a local network or gateway rather than individually connecting to the internet. A gateway can bridge protocols, connect devices that otherwise cannot communicate directly, and link a control terminal with cloud services. ITU-T Recommendation J.1612

What can a smart home do—and what are the trade-offs?
Potential benefits include convenience, automation, physical security, and greater energy efficiency. These are possibilities rather than guaranteed results: outcomes depend on the devices, how they are configured, and how they are used. NIST SP 1343
Connected devices can collect sensitive information or affect physical parts of a home, so security and privacy deserve attention. Before choosing a device, check its update and account controls, data practices, security information, and whether important functions stop working if its cloud service is unavailable. A “smart” label alone does not establish that a product is secure.

NIST SP 1343, published in December 2025, reports a Parks Associates estimate that in 2024, 45% of U.S. households with internet had at least one smart home device and 18% had six or more. Those figures describe U.S. households and the 2024 measurement year; they are not a current worldwide adoption rate. NIST SP 1343
