How to Add Form Submission in Angular

Bind Angular’s form-level submission event to application logic, check validation state, and choose the form approach that fits your needs.

To handle an Angular form submission, bind the form’s (ngSubmit) event to a component method and use a button with type="submit". In the method, check the form’s validity before passing its value to your application logic. Reactive and template-driven forms use this event; Signal Forms have a separate managed submission flow.

Handle submission with a reactive form

Reactive forms keep the form model and its state in the component. Bind a FormGroup to the form with [formGroup], then connect (ngSubmit) to a component method. Angular’s reactive forms guide demonstrates capturing the current form value in that handler. Angular reactive forms guide.

<form [formGroup]="profileForm" (ngSubmit)="onSubmit()">
  <label>
    Name
    <input formControlName="name">
  </label>
  <button type="submit">Save</button>
</form>

In the component, use the form model to check validity and obtain the value:

onSubmit() {
  if (this.profileForm.invalid) {
    return;
  }

  const value = this.profileForm.value;
  // Pass value to the application's next step.
}

Use validators on the form model, and reflect validation state in the interface where it helps users correct input. Angular’s validation guide documents synchronous and asynchronous validators. An asynchronous validator runs only after the synchronous validators pass. Angular form validation guide.

The submit button triggers the form submission, and Angular’s reactive forms guide notes that a user can also submit by pressing Enter. That is why the handler belongs on the form rather than only on a button click. Angular reactive forms guide.

Use template-driven forms for a template-centered model

With FormsModule imported, Angular applies NgForm to form elements by default. It tracks aggregate form value and validation status, and the template can listen for ngSubmit. Child controls use NgModel and need a name attribute to register with the form. Angular template-driven forms guide.

<form #profileForm="ngForm" (ngSubmit)="onSubmit(profileForm)">
  <label>
    Name
    <input name="name" ngModel required>
  </label>
  <button type="submit">Save</button>
</form>

In the component method, use the submitted form’s state and value as needed. Angular’s template-driven guide demonstrates binding ngSubmit to a component method. Angular template-driven forms guide.

Choose an approach based on the form

Approach Where the model lives Data flow and validation When it fits
Reactive forms Explicit form model in the component Direct model access; validators are configured on the model Angular describes this approach as more scalable and easier to test with less setup.
Template-driven forms Primarily in the template through directives More abstract and asynchronous model; controls register through NgModel Angular positions this approach for simpler scenarios.

These are Angular’s qualitative comparison points, not universal performance measurements. Consider how much explicit state, testability, reuse, and scalability the form needs. Angular forms overview.

Signal Forms use a managed submission lifecycle

Signal Forms do not use the same (ngSubmit) pattern as the reactive and template-driven examples above. The guide describes a FormRoot integration that sets novalidate, prevents the browser’s default navigation, and calls submit() when the form is submitted. The submission lifecycle marks interactive fields touched, checks validation, invokes the action if valid, and handles action results or returned errors. Angular Signal Forms submission guide.

What the submit handler does—and does not do

Handling the event gives your application a place to inspect form state and pass data onward; it does not itself send data to a server or prove that it was saved. Network transport, server-side validation, error handling, and persistence must be implemented by the application. For server-backed submission, account for failures and show the user an appropriate result instead of treating a successful local form event as confirmation of a saved record.
