Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Put a web application firewall (WAF) in the API’s request path so traffic passes through it before reaching the service. A WAF can run as a proxy in front of an application or within a web server, where it inspects HTTP traffic against configured rules. A practical starting point is a compatible engine such as ModSecurity or Coraza paired with the OWASP Core Rule Set (CRS). That filtering is one security layer—not a substitute for API authentication, authorization, or other application controls.
How does a WAF fit in front of an API?
The basic traffic path is:
Client → WAF → API service
In this arrangement, the WAF receives HTTP requests, evaluates them against configured rules, and forwards traffic to the API according to the deployment’s policy. OWASP also describes deploying ModSecurity within a web server rather than as a separate proxy. The right placement depends on the server, proxy, gateway, and platform already in use; verify current official documentation for that stack before choosing an integration.

For a proxy deployment, the API’s relevant traffic must actually traverse the WAF for the WAF to inspect it. A component that sits beside the request path cannot filter requests that do not pass through it. Plan routing and network access accordingly, and confirm that clients cannot reach an unprotected API endpoint through another route.
OWASP describes ModSecurity as deployable as a proxy or within a web server to protect against HTTP attacks. OWASP Developer Guide: ModSecurity WAF

Can I run a WAF myself, and what software does it need?
Yes. A self-hosted WAF setup has at least two distinct parts: an inspection engine and a ruleset. They are related, but they are not the same software.
Engine: ModSecurity or Coraza
ModSecurity is an open-source WAF engine. Coraza is another engine that can use the OWASP CRS. Choose an engine only after checking its current support for your actual server or proxy, deployment method, and API traffic. The available OWASP material identifies compatible options but does not establish a universal best choice or a complete, current compatibility matrix.

Ruleset: OWASP CRS
The OWASP Core Rule Set is a separate set of generic attack-detection rules for compatible WAF engines, including ModSecurity and Coraza. It targets common web attack patterns such as SQL injection and cross-site scripting, and aims to minimize false alerts. It is not a complete policy for every API-specific risk or business rule.
OWASP Developer Guide: OWASP CRS
How should I choose and operate a self-hosted WAF?
Check the fit against the system you actually run rather than assuming that any engine and ruleset will work in any gateway or proxy.

- COMPACT - Low power draw, a compact form factor, and silent operation allow it to run unnoticed when placed on a desktop, wall, or rack.
- FLEXIBLE - Three (3) 1 GbE switched (WAN/LAN/OPT) ports allow you to configure three separate 1 GbE switched ports for upto a gigabit of bi-directional traffic.
- Compatibility: Verify support for your existing web server, proxy, gateway, and deployment platform in current official product documentation.
- Inspection needs: Confirm that the engine can inspect the relevant requests and, if required, responses in the placement you intend to use.
- Rules: Check that CRS or another maintained ruleset supports the selected engine and fits your traffic.
- Operations: Make sure your team can configure rules, monitor alerts, investigate false alerts, and tune policy without obscuring real attacks.
- Performance and failure behavior: Measure latency, throughput, resource use, and what happens when the WAF or its dependencies fail under your API’s actual traffic. No comparative benchmark is established here.
- API controls: Identify which risks require checks in application code, identity systems, or API management—not just HTTP pattern filtering.
Do not assume that enabling a ruleset means every rule is appropriate for your endpoints. Establish a deployment and monitoring process, then evaluate the impact of the chosen configuration in your own environment. Specific configuration steps vary by engine and platform; follow the current official documentation for the versions you deploy.
Does a WAF protect against broken API authorization?
Not by itself. A WAF can help identify or block some suspicious HTTP requests, but many API security failures depend on who the caller is, what resource or property they may access, or whether an action is valid in its business context. Those decisions belong in API-specific controls and tests.

The OWASP API Security Top 10 (2023) names these ten risk categories:
- Broken object level authorization
- Broken authentication
- Broken object property level authorization
- Unrestricted resource consumption
- Broken function level authorization
- Unrestricted access to sensitive business flows
- Server-side request forgery (SSRF)
- Security misconfiguration
- Improper inventory management
- Unsafe consumption of APIs
Address these risks with controls appropriate to the API: for example, enforce authorization for the specific object, function, and data properties involved; protect authentication and resource use; validate sensitive business flows; and manage API inventory and third-party API consumption. The exact controls depend on the service. The WAF is an additional layer, not the place to rely on for all of these decisions.
