What Is a Single Point of Failure? Meaning, Examples, and Risks

A single point of failure is a dependency whose failure can stop a system from delivering a required capability. See how to identify one and assess safeguards.

A single point of failure (SPOF) is a component, service, location, or decision point whose failure can prevent a larger system from delivering a required capability. The practical test is simple: if this one thing becomes unavailable, can the system still do its job?

What makes something a single point of failure?

A SPOF is defined by the consequences of failure, not by how likely a component is to break. A component may be reliable yet still be a SPOF if everything depends on it and there is no effective alternative. Conversely, a component that fails often is not necessarily a SPOF if the system can continue operating without it.

The scope matters: a system might be an organization, a production line, an online service, or a specific capability within one of those. Identify the capability that must remain available, then ask whether losing a particular element would stop it.

Examples of single points of failure

A centralized internet service

A centralized provider can become a shared dependency for the applications it hosts. If the provider crashes or behaves maliciously, users may lose access to those applications or receive erroneous or inconsistent results. NIST describes consensus algorithms and state-machine replication as ways for mutually distrusting parties to emulate a centralized service fault-tolerantly; these are specialized approaches, not universal fixes. See NIST IR 8460.

An obsolete scanner on a production line

In a NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership case study, every bag of chips at a facility passed through one barcode scanner. It tracked production throughput and rejected off-quality product, but the scanner and its programmable logic controller had no replacement parts available. That made the scanner a production dependency as well as a maintenance risk. The case study describes the challenge, not its eventual resolution: NIST MEP’s FastLane case study.

A data center exposed to a local hazard

If a data center is the only facility able to provide a critical service, a local hazard could take out the service along with the building. NIST’s critical-facilities report advises considering exceptional facility performance against hazards and a geographically separate redundant facility. Improved building performance and a second facility can be costly, so they belong in resilience planning rather than being treated as automatic requirements. See NIST GCR 23-037.

One person holding all authority

A critical process can depend on a person, not just equipment or software. NIST computer scientist Apostol Vassilev explains that concentrating cryptographic authority in one person creates a bottleneck if that person is unavailable. Threshold cryptography is one approach discussed by NIST: a minimum number of keyholders must cooperate to exercise the authority. The article is about a specific cryptographic context, not a recommendation for every decision-making process: NIST’s threshold cryptography article.

How redundancy helps—and why duplicates may not be enough

Redundancy provides another way to preserve a required capability when an element fails. But two components do not provide meaningful protection if they share the very dependency that can take them both down. Two servers in one facility, for example, may still be exposed to the same building-level hazard; two services using the same provider may share a provider outage.

Diversity addresses a related but different problem: common-mode failure, where similar or connected elements fail together because they share a weakness, configuration, or exposure. NIST’s systems-engineering guidance treats redundancy and diversity as complementary: redundancy supplies another path, while diversity can reduce the chance that one cause disables all paths. See NIST SP 800-160 Rev. 1.

When evaluating a backup or alternate path, check:

  • Independence: Does it avoid the same component, location, provider, power source, network route, or authority dependency?
  • Common-mode exposure: Could one event or shared configuration disable both the primary and the backup?
  • Capability retained: Can the alternate path deliver the capability the system actually requires, or only part of it?
  • Recovery behavior: Can the system isolate the failure and recover without triggering further losses?
  • Cost and upkeep: Is the arrangement practical, and will it stay correctly configured as the system changes?

Why backups can become weak over time

A backup is not protection merely because it exists. Configurations and connectivity change, and a backup can lose its independence or stop being able to take over. NIST’s cyber-resilience guidance warns that redundancy can degrade as systems evolve; resources tied to one hardware component or one data center can also remain single points of failure and attractive targets. See NIST SP 800-160 Vol. 2 Rev. 1.

  • SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)

Resilience choices also involve feasibility, practicality, cost, and uncertainty. The appropriate safeguard depends on what capability must survive, which failures are plausible, and what level of disruption is acceptable—not simply on how many copies of a component can be added.

How to identify a SPOF in a system

  1. Define the required capability. State what the system must continue to do, rather than starting with a list of equipment.
  2. Trace the dependencies. Follow the components, services, locations, and people required to deliver that capability.
  3. Consider loss of each dependency. Ask what happens if it fails, becomes unavailable, or provides incorrect results.
  4. Look for shared dependencies. Check whether apparent backups rely on the same provider, facility, network, power, configuration, or authority.
  5. Choose and maintain safeguards. Weigh alternatives such as redundancy, diversity, recovery measures, or reducing the dependency, then verify that the required capability remains available as the system changes.

Is there a statistic for how often SPOFs cause outages?

The cited NIST publications provide engineering guidance and examples, but they do not establish a cross-sector frequency or loss estimate for single points of failure. A percentage drawn from one organization or industry should not be presented as a general SPOF rate without comparable evidence.
