A Raspberry Pi Zero is a small, general-purpose single-board computer: the original model, announced in 2015, measures 65 × 30 × 5 mm and has a 1GHz single-core processor, 512MB of RAM, microSD storage, and a 40-pin GPIO footprint. It is distinct from the wireless Zero W and the later, faster Zero 2 W.
What “Raspberry Pi Zero” means
The name refers to the original Raspberry Pi Zero, not every board in the Zero family. Raspberry Pi announced it on 26 November 2015 as a compact, low-cost member of its computer range. The announcement listed a 1GHz ARM11 processor, 512MB LPDDR2 SDRAM, microSD storage, mini HDMI, micro USB data and power connections, and an unpopulated 40-pin GPIO header. Its $5 price was the launch price in 2015, not a current retail-price claim. Raspberry Pi’s launch announcement

It is a computer rather than a microcontroller: it can run an operating system from a microSD card and perform general-purpose computing tasks. The small board can also connect to electronics through its GPIO pins, but those pins are not soldered onto the original board.
How the Zero models differ
Model suffixes matter. The family includes variants with different processors, wireless features, and header states.
#1 Best Overall
- Powerful Performance: Equipped with a quad-core 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 processor, the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W delivers a significant performance boost compared to its predecessor. And built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support enable easy wireless communication and Internet access for your projects, five Times Faster.

| Zero | 1GHz single-core ARM11 | No | Footprint is unpopulated |
| Zero W | Original Zero generation | 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth | Footprint is unpopulated |
| Zero WH | Original Zero generation | 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth | Pins pre-soldered |

Raspberry Pi’s product-series guide explains the wireless and header variants. The Zero 2 W is a separate, faster generation, not a specification upgrade that should be attributed to the original Zero. Its product brief reports 40% more single-threaded and five times more multi-threaded performance than the original; the actual difference depends on the workload. Zero 2 W product brief
In a 28 October 2021 announcement, Raspberry Pi founder Eben Upton said the Zero 2 W was “almost exactly five times faster” in multi-threaded sysbench. That is a result for that named benchmark, not a guarantee that every task will run five times faster. Raspberry Pi’s Zero 2 W announcement
What you need to use one
The board by itself is not a complete desktop setup. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance identifies a microSD card with Raspberry Pi OS and a micro USB power supply as basic requirements. To use a screen, connect it through the board’s mini HDMI port; an adapter or suitable cable may be needed for the display. Raspberry Pi Zero product and setup information
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Storage and operating system: a microSD card with Raspberry Pi OS.
- Power: a micro USB power supply.
- Display: a mini HDMI connection to a compatible display.
- GPIO projects: solder header pins if the project needs wired access to the GPIO footprint.
Camera compatibility needs extra care: the Zero camera connector is smaller than the standard connector cable supplied with Raspberry Pi cameras. Raspberry Pi specifies a special Zero camera cable. The camera connector noted for the original Zero applies to version 1.3, so check the board revision and accessory fit before assembling a camera project. The Zero 2 W shares the form factor and fits most existing Zero cases, according to its product brief, but “most” is not a guarantee for every case or accessory.

What can you do with a Raspberry Pi Zero?
Because it runs an operating system and offers GPIO connections, the original Zero can serve as a compact computer for projects that do not require built-in wireless networking or a newer processor. Examples include a small display-based project connected over mini HDMI, or an electronics project that uses the GPIO pins. The specific software and performance a project needs determine whether the original model is suitable; the product definition alone does not establish how well it will handle a particular application.
If a project needs Wi-Fi or Bluetooth without an added wireless adapter, choose a W model rather than the original Zero. If it needs more processing capacity, consider the Zero 2 W and assess the workload rather than assuming a fixed speed-up.
Availability and production horizon
Raspberry Pi’s product page states that the original Zero is planned to remain in production until at least January 2030. That is the manufacturer’s production horizon, not a guarantee that a particular retailer has stock or sells it at any specific price. Raspberry Pi Zero product page
