Design-system components should treat keyboard focus as interface state: keep it visible, move it predictably, and give it a logical destination when an interaction changes or ends. A modal dialog is supposed to contain Tab navigation while it is open; it becomes a keyboard trap when users have no ordinary way to leave the interaction.
How do you prevent keyboard traps in a design system?
ARIA attributes describe semantics; they do not supply a component’s keyboard behavior. The W3C’s ARIA Authoring Practices Guide (APG) says authors must implement keyboard support for ARIA widgets. Define the keys that enter, move through, activate, and exit each component, then follow the APG pattern for that widget rather than inventing a universal rule.

For every reusable component, document:
- Where focus starts when the component opens or receives focus.
- Whether Tab or arrow keys move among its controls, and which keys activate actions.
- How a keyboard user exits or closes the interaction.
- Where focus goes if the active item disappears or the interaction ends.
Composite widgets often expose one Tab stop to the page and use arrow keys to move among internal items. That is different from putting every internal item in the page-wide Tab sequence; use the relevant widget pattern.
Should Tab stay inside a modal?
Yes, while the dialog is modal. The APG’s modal dialog pattern specifies that focus moves inside when the dialog opens, and Tab and Shift+Tab cycle among its contents instead of moving into the page behind it. The pattern also describes Escape as a way to close the dialog.
#1 Best Overall
- Improved Typing Posture: Type more naturally with a curved, split keyframe and reduce muscle strain on your wrists and forearms thanks to the sloping keyboard design
- Pillowed Wrist Rest: Curved wrist rest with memory foam layer offers typing comfort with 54 per cent more wrist support; 25 per cent less wrist bending compared to standard keyboard without palm rest
- Perfect Stroke Keys: Scooped keys match the shape of your fingertips so you can type with confidence on a wireless keyboard crafted for comfort, precision and fluidity
- Adjustable Palm Lift: Whether seated or standing, keep your wrists in total comfort and a natural typing posture with ergonomically-designed tilt legs of 0, -4 and -7 degrees
- Ergonomist Approved: The ERGO K860 wireless ergonomic keyboard is certified by United States Ergonomics to improve posture and lower muscle strain
- Open: When the user activates the opener, move focus to an appropriate element inside the dialog. The first focusable control is a common choice. For a dialog with substantial introductory content or a task where users should read before acting, focusing a static title or introductory element with
tabindex="-1"may be more suitable. - Navigate: Keep Tab and Shift+Tab within the modal while it is open.
- Exit: Include a visible close or cancel control in the Tab sequence and support Escape according to the APG pattern.
- Close: Return focus to the opener unless it has disappeared or another destination better serves the next step in the workflow.
This boundary is intentional, not a keyboard trap, because the user can close the dialog through an available, operable route.
Why does keyboard focus jump to the top of the page?
When the focused element is removed or hidden without moving focus, the browser may place focus on the document body. The user then loses their position in the interface. The APG’s keyboard-interface guidance describes this risk when a dialog trigger or a list item following a deleted item does not receive focus.

Make focus restoration part of the action that changes the interface:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Dialog closes: Return focus to its invoking control if that control still exists and is available.
- Focused item is deleted: Choose a surviving target that fits the remaining workflow, such as the next item, the previous item, or a containing control.
- Workflow advances: If the opener is gone or returning to it would be disorienting, move focus to the next useful destination instead.
Do not assume that removing an element will produce a helpful focus destination. Select and move focus to a logical surviving element as part of the same interaction.

When is a dialog really modal?
A dialog should be marked modal only when the application actually prevents interaction with the background while it is open. The APG warns that aria-modal="true" can make content outside the dialog unavailable to assistive-technology users. The dialog must therefore behave modally for all users, and its visual treatment must make the outside content appear unavailable. See the APG’s modal dialog pattern.
Do not use aria-modal as a cosmetic label for a panel that still lets users interact with the page behind it. A visible close or cancel control should also be available in the dialog’s Tab sequence.

How should focus behave in native and custom dialogs?
HTML’s <dialog> element is one implementation option; a custom ARIA dialog is another. MDN documents the native element in its HTML dialog reference, while the APG specifies the expected dialog interaction pattern. The available guidance does not establish a universal winner or a browser-and-assistive-technology compatibility ranking.

How do you keep focus visible and predictable?
Keep the focus indicator easy to distinguish from selection styling and other decoration. Users need to see which element will receive keyboard input; a selected item and a focused item are not necessarily the same thing. The APG’s keyboard-interface guidance recommends consistent movement patterns and advises relying on browser focus indicators unless there is a deliberate reason to override them. If you replace native indicators, make the alternative robust and clearly visible.
How should teams test focus behavior?
Test the interaction itself, not only the presence of ARIA attributes. For each component, operate it with a keyboard alone and check the following:
- Open the component and confirm focus moves to the intended starting point.
- Navigate forward and backward with the supported keys; confirm movement follows the documented pattern.
- Activate controls and verify focus remains visible and usable.
- Close the interaction or complete the workflow; confirm focus reaches a sensible destination.
- Remove the currently focused content and confirm focus moves to an intentional surviving target.
