It can also try to associate queue pairs with local processes. It is useful for operational visibility, not a substitute for benchmarking an application or a general-purpose network monitor.
What rdmatop shows
The rdmatop project describes the tool as “htop, but for RDMA traffic.” Its live view reports per-device throughput in Gbps and packets per second, drops, RDMA read/write counters, retransmits, and health events. It also attempts to show which processes are using each RDMA device. These are features documented by the project, not results from independent performance testing. Project README

This makes rdmatop useful when you want to see which RDMA device is active during a communication workload. The project names NCCL, NVSHMEM, UCX Perftest, IB Perftest, and NIXL as example contexts. The monitor displays device activity; it does not independently measure an application’s benchmark performance.

Requirements and platform limits
The project lists Linux and an RDMA-capable network interface as requirements. Its examples include NVIDIA/Mellanox ConnectX and AWS EFA, but those examples are not a complete compatibility list. The README says the netlink-based tool does not support macOS or Windows. Project README

Counter availability and behavior can differ across devices and driver stacks. The project documentation does not establish a complete provider-by-provider compatibility matrix, kernel or driver requirements, or all necessary permissions. Check the README and your local device and driver behavior before relying on a particular counter or process mapping.
How rdmatop gathers and calculates data
According to the project README, rdmatop uses Linux RDMA netlink. Its described workflow is:

- Intel Core i5-10210U (up to 4.2GHz) - 1TB PCIe NVMe + 1TB HDD - 32GB DDR4 SDRAM
- 17.3" HD+ (1600x900) Display, Intel UHD Graphics 620
- Built in HD 720p Webcam with Microphone - Bluetooth Version4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.1 (Data Only), 1x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack
- Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-Bit - 6-Row Keyboard w/ Full Numberpad
- Enumerate devices with
RDMA_NLDEV_CMD_GET. - Retrieve hardware statistics with
RDMA_NLDEV_CMD_STAT_GET, the interface also used byrdma statistic show. - Request queue-pair information with
RDMA_NLDEV_CMD_RES_QP_GETand enrich it with information from/procto associate queue pairs with process IDs. - Calculate rates from two counter snapshots and the elapsed time between them.
This explains why the display is a live view derived from counters rather than a direct application-level benchmark. The implementation details above are the project’s account of its design, not an independently verified audit.
Install and start the monitor
The README documents three installation routes. Its Ubuntu PPA instructions list Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, and 26.04 for amd64 and arm64. You can also install with Cargo or build from source using the project’s Makefile. Because package availability and supported distributions can change, consult the current README for the exact commands and prerequisites.

- Choose the documented installation route that matches your Linux environment: the Ubuntu PPA,
cargo install rdmatop, or a source build using the Makefile. - After installation, run
rdmatopto open the terminal interface. - Observe the device and counters while the workload of interest is active; interpret the display in light of the counters your device and driver expose.
The Docs.rs package page showed version 0.1.32 with a release date of 2026-10-02 when consulted. That is a time-specific package listing, not a guarantee that this will remain the latest version. Docs.rs package page

What to verify before relying on the display
- Confirm that the host is running Linux and has an RDMA-capable interface available.
- Check that your device and driver expose the counters you need; the documented examples do not prove support for every provider or stack.
- Treat process attribution as an attempted queue-pair-to-PID mapping, not a guarantee that every workload will be identified.
- Use a workload-specific benchmark or measurement method when you need application performance results or independently validated measurement accuracy; the project documentation does not establish either for rdmatop.
