A multimodal language model is a language-model-based system that can work with more than one kind of information, such as text, images, speech, or video. A multi-model system instead uses multiple models together—often routing a request to the model best suited to handle it. The terms describe different things, though one system can be both multimodal and multi-model.
“Multimodel language model” is ambiguous: people may use it when they mean “multimodal language model,” or to describe a system that coordinates several models. Check the source context before assuming which meaning applies.

Multimodal vs. multi-model: what is the difference?
| Term | What it describes | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Multimodal | The kinds of information a system handles, such as text, images, speech, or video. | A language model connected to image, video, and speech encoders. |
| Multi-model | The use or coordination of multiple distinct models. | A router that selects an eligible language model for each prompt. |
These are separate dimensions. A router may choose among text-only models, while a single multimodal model may handle images and text without routing to another model. A system could also combine both approaches.
How can a language model handle different modalities?
One approach connects a language model to modality-specific components that interpret non-text inputs and pass their representations to the language model. The 2023 X-LLM paper describes an example that aligned frozen image, video, and speech encoders with a frozen language model using modality-specific interfaces. That architecture illustrates one design; it is not a definition that applies to every multimodal system. Read the X-LLM paper.
#1 Best Overall
Multimodal capability does not by itself establish how well a system performs a particular task. X-LLM’s authors reported a score of 84.5% relative to GPT-4 on a synthetic multimodal instruction-following dataset. That is a result for that paper’s experiment, not a general quality ranking or an independent benchmark conclusion. The authors also noted limitations in the language model underlying their system, including unreliable reasoning and fabricated facts.
How do multiple models work together?
Routing among language models
A managed router can analyze a prompt and select an eligible language model. Microsoft Foundry documents three routing modes—Balanced, Cost, and Quality—and says teams should evaluate routing against their own workloads. Its documentation also says the response reports which model was selected. See Microsoft Foundry’s model-router documentation.
Selection may change between turns: Microsoft says the router can choose a different model on separate turns unless session affinity applies and the associated model remains eligible. That matters when an application needs consistent behavior or must know which model handled each request.

A mixture-of-experts (MoE) architecture contains multiple expert networks and uses a gating mechanism to select a subset for an input. This is a way to use multiple components within a model architecture, not necessarily a service that routes requests among separately hosted products. An academic seminar chapter describes computational efficiency as a potential benefit and identifies routing collapse—where only one or a few experts receive most inputs—as a training concern. The same chapter notes that task requirements can conflict and reduce performance in multipurpose, multimodal-multitask models. Read the seminar chapter on multimodal and multipurpose models.
What does “multimodel language model” mean in a specific article or product?
Use the surrounding description to resolve the wording. Look for whether it refers to multiple input or output types, multiple model components, or a router that chooses among distinct models. “Multimodal language model” is the clearer term when the point is handling different information types; “multi-model language system” is clearer when multiple models are coordinated.
Some related terms do not mean the same thing. A multipurpose model, as described in the seminar chapter, is a multimodal-multitask model. Multitask learning means training on multiple tasks; it may help generalization when tasks are related, but conflicting task requirements can hurt performance. Those concepts are related to multimodality, but they are not interchangeable with every multimodal LLM or multi-model application.

Best Value
- Inputs and outputs: Which types—text, images, speech, or video—does the system support?
- Architecture: Does it connect modality-specific encoders, route requests among models, or use an MoE?
- Consistency and visibility: Can the selected model change between turns, and can the application identify which model answered?
- Workload performance: Evaluate quality, latency, and cost using representative prompts and tasks rather than assuming that routing or expert selection guarantees a good result.
- Operational limits: Check capability, fallback, data-zone, and compliance constraints. Microsoft’s router documentation describes geographic and compliance boundaries that can affect eligible choices.
What should you remember?
- Multimodal refers to information types; multi-model refers to multiple models or their coordination.
- A model can gain image, video, or speech capability through connected encoders and interfaces, but architectures vary.
- A router can select among eligible models, and its choice may change across turns.
- Neither multimodal capability nor model selection guarantees quality; assess the system on the tasks and constraints that matter to you.
