A folding-screen TV is a television whose display physically unfolds for viewing and folds away as part of the device, often onto its base. The term describes the screen’s mechanism—not a standard product category—and is different from a TV that rolls up, stays curved, or merely looks like artwork when switched off.
What makes a TV a folding-screen TV?
The display itself changes position: it unfolds to become a viewing screen and folds away when not in use. That physical movement is the defining feature. The phrase is a practical description, not a formal industry-standard classification.

A fixed television does not become a folding-screen TV just because it is thin, curved, hidden behind a panel, or designed to resemble a picture. Nor does a display qualify simply because it retracts by a different mechanism.
How folding TVs differ from other designs

HDTVTest distinguishes the C SEED N1 folding TV from LG’s rollable OLED TV and Samsung’s The Frame, which it describes as neither folding nor rolling: HDTVTest’s report on the C SEED N1.

A documented example: C SEED N1
C SEED describes the N1 as a folding-screen TV. Its 2025 brochure says the 4K MicroLED display rises and unfolds, then folds back onto its base when unused. The manufacturer lists screen sizes of 165, 137, and 103 inches, rotation of up to 180 degrees, HDR10+ support, and integrated speakers. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. See the C SEED 2025 brochure.
The N1 illustrates the defining mechanism, but one product example does not establish that folding-screen TVs are a broad or commonly available consumer category. HDTVTest reported a UK starting price of at least £229,000 at the time of its article, about 2024; that historical report is not a current quote. It also relayed C SEED’s claim that more than 200 N1 TVs had been sold, a company-reported figure rather than an independently audited total.

What the historical record does—and does not—show
BOE Technology Group’s 2019 interim report says the company and its clients launched “the first folding-screen TV” in early July. The report does not name a model or establish that it remains available to buy. Its use of “first” is the company’s historical claim, not independent verification of an industry-wide milestone. What to check when you encounter the term
- Confirm what moves: the screen must physically fold; a fixed curved panel or an artwork-style design does not meet the definition.
- Distinguish folding from retraction: a display that winds into a housing is rollable, not folding.
- Check what the source actually establishes: a manufacturer description can document a product’s stated mechanism and specifications, but does not independently prove performance, current availability, or market-wide adoption.
