A mobile Internet device (MID) is a compact portable computer designed mainly for wireless Internet access. It is a historical, descriptive category—not a universally standardized class with one agreed screen-size limit. “Mobile device” is broader: it includes familiar products such as smartphones and tablets.
What does MID stand for?
MID stands for “mobile Internet device.” The term describes a small, portable computing device whose central purpose is getting online wirelessly, often alongside basic messaging. It is best understood as a product-category label used with somewhat different boundaries by different sources.

How large is a mobile Internet device?
There is no single size threshold shared by all definitions. The Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF) describes a very small, tablet-shaped portable computer, generally without a keyboard, with a touchscreen whose diagonal does not greatly exceed about 4 inches (10.16 cm). Its entry was last updated in 2009, and places the device between a smartphone and an ultramobile personal computer.
Oxford’s American dictionary defines a MID more relatively: a handheld computer larger than a smartphone but smaller than a tablet PC, used mainly for personal Internet services. It does not set a specific screen-size limit or describe the input method. These definitions illustrate why the acronym should not be treated as a precise modern hardware specification.

How is a MID different from a mobile device?
“Mobile device” is the broader term. The NIST CSRC glossary defines one as a portable computing device small enough for one person to carry, designed for wireless operation, with local data storage and its own power source; its examples include smartphones, tablets, and e-readers. OQLF’s 2024 entry likewise describes a wireless, self-powered computing device usable while moving, with smartphones and electronic tablets as examples.
| Term | What it describes | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile Internet device (MID) | A compact portable computer centered on wireless Internet use, often described as a handheld device between a smartphone and a tablet. | Historical and variable; OQLF’s 2009 entry gives a touchscreen diagonal not greatly exceeding about 4 inches, while Oxford uses a relative size range. |
| Mobile device | A portable, self-powered wireless computing device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or e-reader. | Broad category; NIST’s definition does not limit it to Internet-focused handheld computers. |
So a smartphone or tablet can plainly be a mobile device without necessarily being called a MID. The latter label is narrower and depends on the definition being used.

Does “mobile Internet” mean cellular data?
No. Internet access from a mobile device can use a mobile cellular network or another wireless connection such as Wi-Fi. The International Telecommunication Union’s 2022 household ICT definitions recognize both means of access and list phones, tablets, portable computers, and other devices. A GSMA report excerpt, citing a 2014 definition, also describes mobile Internet access as wireless access through a mobile phone, smartphone, USB wireless modem, tablet, or other mobile device.
In other words, “mobile” describes the portable or wireless context; it does not by itself establish that a device has cellular service or a SIM card.

How should you use the term today?
Use “mobile Internet device” when discussing the historical category or explaining what MID means. If you mean a current phone, tablet, or similar product generally, “mobile device” is clearer. When a precise size boundary matters, name the definition and its date: OQLF’s approximately 4-inch description is from a 2009 entry, not a current universal standard.
