That is what “memoryless” means: earlier states do not change the next-step probabilities once the current state is known. It does not mean that a real system—or an AI model—has no history.
What is a Markov chain in simple terms?
A Markov chain describes a sequence of states and the probabilities of moving from one state to another. A state might be a weather condition, a web page, or a word. The model assigns probabilities to possible next states based on the current state.

For example, imagine a weather model with three states: sunny, cloudy, and rainy. From “sunny,” it might assign a 70% chance of another sunny day, a 20% chance of a cloudy day, and a 10% chance of rain. Those probabilities describe the model; they are not a forecast unless the values have been estimated and validated for a particular place and period.
In general, let Xt be the state at time t. The Markov property is:

P(Xt+1 = j | Xt = i, Xt-1, …, X0) = P(Xt+1 = j | Xt = i)
In words, once the present state is known, the earlier states do not further change the modeled probabilities for the next state. Berkeley’s explanation of Markov decision processes expresses a related condition with the current action included: Berkeley CS 188: Markov Decision Processes.
What does “memoryless” mean?
“Memoryless” is a property of the model’s state representation, not a claim that the underlying world literally forgets. If the state leaves out information that matters to the next step, the model may not satisfy the Markov property. For instance, a weather state containing only “sunny” could be insufficient if the model also needs season or location to make useful predictions.

One remedy is to define a richer state that carries relevant context. A sequence of recent weather conditions, for example, could be represented as a single state. The Markov property can then hold for the expanded representation even when a simpler one did not. The practical question is not whether the real system has history, but whether the chosen state contains the information needed for the model’s next-step probabilities.
How do transition probabilities and matrices work?
A transition diagram draws states as nodes and possible moves as arrows labeled with probabilities. For every state, its outgoing probabilities must sum to 1. A transition matrix stores the same information in a table: the entry in row i and column j, written Pij, is the probability of moving from state i to state j.
For the weather example, a possible matrix is:
| Current state | Next: Sunny | Next: Cloudy | Next: Rainy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunny | 0.7 | 0.2 | 0.1 |
| Cloudy | 0.3 | 0.4 | 0.3 |
| Rainy | 0.2 | 0.3 | 0.5 |
Each row sums to 1 because it lists all the modeled possibilities for the next state given that row’s current state. If the current state is uncertain, represent that uncertainty as a row vector of probabilities. Under this row-vector convention, multiplying the current distribution x by the transition matrix P gives the distribution after one step, xP; after n steps, it is xPn. This is how the matrix propagates uncertainty forward. The textbook treatment of Markov chains and matrices is in Introduction to Information Retrieval: Markov chains.

How does PageRank use a Markov chain?
The classic random-surfer explanation treats each web page as a state. A surfer on a page follows one of its outgoing links; pages linked from pages that are visited often can, in turn, receive more visits. In the textbook model, the surfer sometimes teleports to another page. This makes it possible to reach pages that are otherwise disconnected and handles pages with no outgoing links.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →In the Stanford textbook’s illustrative version, the surfer teleports with probability α and follows a uniformly selected outgoing link with probability 1 − α. The book gives α = 0.1 as a possible typical value for that presentation; it is an explanatory parameter, not a statement about Google’s current production setting. The long-run fraction of visits to each page is the PageRank in this model. See Introduction to Information Retrieval: The PageRank computation.
This model explains the mathematical idea behind PageRank, but it should not be mistaken for a complete description of modern Google Search. Google’s current Guide to Google Search ranking systems says PageRank was among the core systems used at launch, remains part of its core ranking systems, and has evolved substantially since its original version.

What is the difference between Monte Carlo and Markov chain Monte Carlo?
Monte Carlo methods use random sampling or simulation to estimate quantities that may be difficult to calculate exactly. Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is a particular approach: it generates a sequence of samples in which the next sample depends on the current one. The chain is designed so that, under suitable conditions, it explores a target probability distribution.
After the chain has explored that distribution sufficiently well, its samples can be used to estimate quantities such as expected values, parameters, or uncertainty. A common use is Bayesian inference, where the target distribution may be a posterior distribution. Jessica E. Speagle’s conceptual introduction explains this role of MCMC: A Conceptual Introduction to Markov Chain Monte Carlo Methods.
The distinction is straightforward: MCMC uses a Markov chain as part of its sampling procedure; Monte Carlo methods in general do not all use Markov chains. A finite chain run is not automatically a representative sample. How well it explores the target distribution depends on the algorithm and problem, and draws from the same chain can be correlated. Analysts therefore consider initialization, mixing, convergence checks, and estimator uncertainty rather than treating sample count alone as proof of reliability.

Are language models and ChatGPT Markov chains?
Small language models can be built from Markov-chain ideas. A first-order word model treats the current word as the state and estimates probabilities for the next word. An n-gram model uses a bounded recent sequence—such as the last two or three words—as context. Because context is limited, these models are easy to describe but cannot directly condition on arbitrarily long preceding text.
Aalto University’s learning resource illustrates how Markov chains can generate text from patterns in a training corpus, using words, syllables, or letters as states: Aalto OpenCS: Markov Chains and n-gram Models.
ChatGPT should not be described as simply a first-order Markov chain. Autoregressive language models predict a subsequent token from prior context, as described in Google’s Machine Learning Glossary. But a modern model’s next-token probabilities come from a learned neural computation applied to context, rather than a small fixed table of transitions between individual words. The shared idea is sequential prediction; the model structures are different. The cited description does not establish ChatGPT’s exact internal architecture or decoding configuration.

When is a Markov-chain model useful?
Markov chains are useful when a system can be represented as states and its next-step behavior can reasonably be modeled from its current state. They make uncertainty and repeated transitions explicit, and their small examples are often easy to inspect. More context can make a model more realistic, but it also enlarges the state space and can make the model harder to estimate or explain.
Quick Recap
- Define the state carefully: include the information that materially affects the next-step probabilities.
- Check the transition probabilities: each state’s outgoing probabilities should sum to 1.
- Match the model to the question: a simple chain may explain a process, while a richer representation may be needed for accurate prediction.
- For MCMC, assess the sampling behavior: mixing, convergence, correlation, and computational cost are more informative than calling one sampler universally best.
