Yes—1080p can still look good on a small TV, especially when you sit farther away and mostly watch HD or lower-resolution content. But in 2026, 1080p sets are rare and typically small, so they are a limited choice for a new purchase. Whether one makes sense depends on screen size, viewing distance, picture features, and the actual price compared with available 4K TVs.
What does 1080p mean compared with 4K?
1080p, also called Full HD, has a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. 4K UHD has a resolution of 3840 × 2160: twice the pixels in each dimension and four times as many overall. Sony’s support documentation describes the formats as roughly two million pixels for 1080p and over eight million for 4K (Sony support).

More pixels can show finer detail, but resolution is only one part of picture quality. A higher-resolution label does not, by itself, tell you how good a TV’s color, brightness, contrast, or processing will look.

It depends chiefly on screen size and how far you sit from it. The larger the screen and the closer you are, the more likely the extra detail in 4K is to be visible. For a smaller screen or a longer viewing distance, that difference may be difficult to notice.

RTINGS gives a source-specific example: a viewer with perfect vision may not distinguish a 65-inch 1080p set from a 65-inch 4K set at 10 feet, while the extra 4K detail may become noticeable at about 8 feet and closer. These are illustrative distances, not universal cutoffs; vision and viewing conditions vary. RTINGS’ TV size and distance guide explains the relationship.
Are 1080p TVs still good in 2026?
They can be good enough for a particular use, but they are no longer a broad, easy-to-find category. RTINGS’ March 2026 resolution guide describes 1080p TVs as rare, with remaining examples mostly in the 20–32-inch range; 4K TVs are much more common. Selection varies by location and retailer.

A small 1080p television can still suit a room where the screen is viewed from farther away, or where the available content is HD or lower resolution. For a large screen, close seating, or a new TV intended to last through changing viewing habits, 4K is more likely to be a practical fit.
What happens when a 4K TV plays 1080p content?
A 4K TV upscales lower-resolution video to fit its panel. Upscaling can make the image look appropriate on the larger pixel grid, but it cannot turn the original source into native 4K detail. The result depends on the TV’s processing, so upscaling quality matters more if much of what you watch comes from lower-resolution sources. RTINGS describes its approach to assessing this in its upscaling and sharpness processing test.

Is HDR the same as resolution?
No. Resolution describes pixel count; HDR (high dynamic range) concerns how a TV handles color and luminance. A TV can be 1080p or 4K and support HDR, but the HDR label alone does not establish how effectively the set displays HDR content. Treat resolution and HDR performance as separate factors when comparing TVs. RTINGS explains the distinction in its 4K versus 1080p guide.

Compare the sets you can actually buy rather than assuming that one resolution is always the better value. A 1080p set is a reasonable candidate when you specifically want a small screen, sit at a distance where extra detail is less noticeable, and are satisfied with HD or lower-resolution viewing. Consider 4K when you want a larger screen, sit relatively close, or prefer the flexibility of a format that is much more common in the current market.

Before deciding, check these points against your room and the listings available to you:

- Screen size: Bigger screens make fine resolution differences more visible.
- Normal viewing distance: Judge the TV from where you will usually sit, not from a showroom aisle.
- Content: Consider whether you mainly watch HD or lower-resolution material, or want to make use of 4K sources.
- Picture features: Compare HDR performance and, if you often watch lower-resolution sources on a 4K set, upscaling.
- Actual price and availability: 1080p sets are rare, and the available selection varies. Compare current listings and features; the evidence does not establish that 1080p is categorically cheaper.
There is no model-by-model or current-price comparison here, so a specific set cannot be named as the best buy. Base the decision on the actual options in your market and the viewing conditions that matter to you.
