Depending on the model, it can support features such as VLANs, traffic prioritization, access controls, and network monitoring. “Managed” describes the level of control—not a promise that every switch has the same features.
What does a managed Ethernet switch do?
Like any Ethernet switch, it connects wired devices on a local network and forwards traffic between them. A managed model adds controls for configuring and observing that traffic, typically through a management interface or protocol. The available controls vary by product; consult the model’s current specifications and management guide rather than relying on the category name alone.

For example, an administrator may use VLANs to separate groups of devices, configure quality of service (QoS) to prioritize selected traffic, or use monitoring tools to collect information about the switch. Some models also offer access-control or authentication features. Cisco’s product documentation provides examples of these capabilities, including VLAN, QoS, SNMP, and 802.1X support on applicable models: Cisco Sx350 Series specifications and the Cisco 350 and 550 Series administration guide.
How does it differ from unmanaged and smart switches?
| Category | Typical level of control | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Unmanaged | Designed to forward traffic with little or no user configuration. | A straightforward network that needs more wired connections. |
| Smart or smart managed | Offers a more limited set of configuration options than a fully managed product in Cisco’s comparison. The label is not used identically by every vendor. | A network that needs some configuration, after confirming the specific features available. |
| Managed | Provides a broader set of configuration and monitoring functions; the exact feature set depends on the model. | A network that needs deliberate segmentation, traffic handling, access controls, or monitoring. |
These are product categories, not guarantees about an individual switch. Cisco’s overview and comparison explain the distinctions: Managed versus unmanaged switches and Cisco unmanaged, smart, and managed switches (updated October 25, 2021).
#1 Best Overall
- GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
- EASY SMART MANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Intuitive software interface offers Easy Smart Managed Essentials capabilities to configure VLANs, prioritize traffic with QoS, monitor ports, and manage network security for small businesses.
- FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
- SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
- REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only
What features should you check?
Choose against the needs of your network, not the word “managed” on the box. Check the product’s current datasheet and management guide for:
- Ports and speed: Confirm the number of Ethernet ports and the speed each supports.
- Power over Ethernet (PoE): If the switch must power devices such as access points or cameras, check whether PoE is supported and whether the available power budget meets your needs. PoE is available on some models, not all.
- VLANs: Verify that the switch supports the kind of network separation you intend to configure.
- QoS: Check which traffic classification and prioritization controls are available.
- Security and access: Look for the specific access-control or authentication features your network requires, such as 802.1X where supported.
- Management and monitoring: Confirm the available interface or protocol, such as a web interface, command line, or SNMP, and whether it fits the way you will maintain the network.
SNMP uses manager-agent operations to exchange device information; Cisco describes this in its administration guide. Support for any particular management method still depends on the switch.
Rank #2
- PLUG-AND-PLAY GIGABIT MANAGED SWITCH: 8 x 1Gbps auto-negotiating ports work the moment you plug in — full-gigabit speed over Cat5e/Cat6 cabling.
- MANAGED, WITHOUT THE COMPLEXITY: Easy Smart web GUI on Windows, Mac or Linux — no app or Windows-only utility, unlike many competing switches.
- SEGMENT & PRIORITIZE TRAFFIC: Up to 64 VLANs, QoS, IGMP snooping and port mirroring keep voice, video and data fast, secure and organized.
- BUILT-IN PROTECTION: Auto DoS prevention, loop detection, broadcast storm control and cable test keep your network stable and easy to troubleshoot.
- RELIABLE 24/7 BACKBONE: Rugged fanless metal housing runs cool and silent at 0 dBA — the managed switch trusted in homes, offices and small business.
Do you need a managed switch?
If you only need additional wired ports and have no need to configure switch behavior, an unmanaged switch may be enough. Consider a managed model when you need switch-level control—for example, to separate traffic with VLANs, prioritize selected traffic, manage access, or monitor the network. A smart switch may suit a need for limited configuration, but verify the features rather than assuming the label has a universal meaning.

Do not assume that “managed” means the switch can route between IP networks. Layer 2 switching and Layer 3 routing are distinct capabilities; check the documentation for the specific model if routing is required.
