What Is a GB? Gigabytes Explained for Streaming

A GB measures data, not internet speed. See how GB differs from GiB and Mbps, plus Netflix's per-hour streaming estimates and a practical way to calculate usage.

A gigabyte (GB) is a measure of how much data you use—not how fast your internet connection is. One decimal GB equals 1,000,000,000 bytes. How much data streaming takes depends on the service and its quality or data-use settings; Netflix, for example, estimates up to 3 GB per hour for HD on High and up to 7 GB per hour for UHD on High.

What does GB mean?

GB stands for gigabyte, a unit of data quantity. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines one gigabyte as 109 bytes, or 1,000,000,000 bytes. It describes an amount of information, such as the data used to watch a video or the size of a file.

A gigabyte is not a gigabit. The capitalization matters: GB means gigabyte, while Gb means gigabit. Internet plans and connection speeds often use bits; file sizes and data allowances commonly use bytes.

GB, GiB and Mbps are different units

Unit What it measures Meaning
GB Data quantity 1,000,000,000 bytes (decimal), as defined by NIST.
GiB Data quantity 1,073,741,824 bytes (binary), according to the NIST CSRC glossary.
Mbps Data-transfer rate Megabits per second: a rate describing how quickly data travels, not a data allowance.

GB and GiB are close in size but not identical. A device or service may display one or the other, so check the unit before comparing a displayed storage amount with an allowance. Mbps answers a separate question: how quickly a connection can deliver data.

How much data does streaming use?

There is no single GB-per-hour figure for all streaming. It varies by service, video quality and selected data setting. Netflix’s Help Center gives these per-device estimates for Netflix viewing; they are service estimates, not universal rates:

Netflix setting Published data-use estimate
Low Up to 0.3 GB per hour
Medium Up to 0.7 GB per hour
High, SD Up to 1 GB per hour
High, HD Up to 3 GB per hour
High, UHD/4K Up to 7 GB per hour
Auto Adjusts to balance data use and video quality according to connection conditions; no fixed hourly amount is stated.

Netflix also describes mobile settings in approximate viewing hours per GB: Automatic is about 4 hours per GB, Save Data about 6 hours per GB, and Maximum Data can use 1 GB per 20 minutes or more, depending on the device and network speed. Netflix cautions that Maximum Data is intended for unlimited data plans. These are Netflix’s own estimates, not estimates for other streaming services. See Netflix’s data-use settings and estimates.

Estimate viewing against a data allowance

For a rough calculation, use the streaming provider’s estimate for the setting and quality you expect to watch:

  • Estimate data used: estimated GB per hour × viewing hours.
  • Estimate viewing time: data allowance ÷ estimated GB per hour.

For example, using Netflix’s High HD estimate of up to 3 GB per hour, two hours would work out to up to about 6 GB. That is arithmetic based on Netflix’s estimate, not a promise that a particular session will use exactly that amount. If the provider does not publish an estimate for your setting, these figures cannot establish your usage.

What connection speed has to do with it

Speed and data use are related to streaming but are not interchangeable. Netflix recommends stable connection speeds of at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p and 15 Mbps for 4K. Those are Netflix’s quality recommendations, not GB-per-hour figures or guaranteed minimums for every home. Netflix’s recommended internet speeds address playback quality, not how much data your plan includes.

Netflix says congestion anywhere along the connection can affect streaming quality or cause playback problems. Home connection strength and simultaneous network use can also affect the viewing experience. The available figures do not quantify how much each factor changes data volume. Netflix’s overview, How Netflix streams videos, explains the connection context.

Where to change Netflix data use

Netflix says data use can be changed in its data settings, and restricting use may affect video quality. Choose a setting with your data allowance in mind, then use the resulting quality and provider estimate as a guide; the published estimates are not exact measurements of every viewing session. Netflix’s current instructions are in How to control how much data Netflix uses.

Why the often-quoted “3 hours per GB” figure is old

Netflix’s May 5, 2016 announcement said its then-default cellular setting would allow about three hours of shows and movies per gigabyte, at approximately 600 kilobits per second. That statement described a setting at the time; it is historical context, not Netflix’s current default or a general streaming rule. For current Netflix estimates, use the service’s published data-use settings.

What GB means for a YouTube 24/7 stream

For a continuously running YouTube stream, GB concerns the volume of video data sent over time, while Mbps describes its transfer rate. If your question is about keeping prerecorded video live on YouTube around the clock rather than watching a stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube, so your computer does not have to stay on. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not stream a camera feed.

StreamNeo uses one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K at 60 fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card; that is one free day per account. Billing options are:

  • Daily $0.99 per day
  • Weekly $2.99 per week
  • Monthly $9.99 per month
  • 6 months $49.99 for 6 months
  • Yearly $89.99 a year

The same product is included on every plan; only the billing length changes. You can cancel any time. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. StreamNeo’s upload-time calculator, cloud vs PC cost calculator and copyright safety checklist can help with planning.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer can stay off; uploads stream as made at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your StreamNeo free day.
