To troubleshoot an RTSP or RTSPS restreaming error, first identify which stage fails: the control connection, the RTSP session, the negotiated media path, or—on RTSPS—the TLS handshake. Save the exact response and sanitized logs before changing settings. A working RTSP connection does not prove that video packets can reach the relay or viewer.
How RTSP restreaming can fail
RTSP coordinates a stream through control requests such as DESCRIBE, SETUP, and PLAY. The media path is negotiated separately in SETUP. As a result, an endpoint can accept control requests while media is blocked, misrouted, or unsupported.

For a restream, identify the individual hops: source or camera to relay, then relay to viewer. Test them separately where possible. Note whether the stream never connects, fails at a particular request, starts without video, freezes, or drops intermittently. RTSP 1.0 (RFC 2326) remains in deployed equipment; RFC 7826 specifies RTSP 2.0. Device behavior, supported versions, paths, ports, and defaults vary.
Capture the failure before changing settings
Record enough detail to reproduce the problem and identify its protocol layer. Remove passwords, access tokens, and stream keys before sharing logs.

- URI scheme (
rtsp://orrtsps://), host, port, and path; redact credentials and sensitive query parameters. - Camera/source, relay, and client software versions, and which hop you tested.
- The first failing RTSP method, exact status code, response headers, and any
TransportorSessionheaders. - Whether media packets arrive, and the TLS error text if the connection is secure.
- What changed immediately before the problem began, if known.
Follow this troubleshooting sequence
- Locate the failing hop. Test source-to-relay and relay-to-viewer separately if your setup allows it. If only one segment fails, investigate that segment rather than changing every device at once.
- Check the URI and scheme. Compare the scheme, host or IP, port, path, and required query parameters with the source or relay’s own configuration. Use
rtsp://orrtsps://as that endpoint requires; do not assume a path or port from another device applies. - Identify the first failed RTSP method. Check whether the first unsuccessful request is
DESCRIBE,SETUP, orPLAY. Preserve the response and headers; the point in the exchange helps distinguish a URI or authentication issue from a session or transport issue. - Check session state. If the server reports a missing, invalid, or timed-out session, establish a fresh session and follow the current server response. Do not reuse an old session identifier or send
PLAYbefore the setup sequence expected by that implementation. - Compare requested and accepted media transport. Read the
Transportrequest and response. Confirm that the selected transport is supported by both ends and that the relevant network path is allowed. - Test the negotiated media path. If control succeeds but there is no video, check whether media packets reach the intended destination, including required ports and return routing for that setup. Account for firewall and NAT behavior. Opening only the RTSP listening port may not permit the separately negotiated media traffic.
- For RTSPS, inspect TLS before RTSP. If the handshake fails before any RTSP status response, examine certificate trust and validity, hostname identity and SNI handling, configured CA certificates, and compatible TLS parameters using the relevant software’s documentation.
- Change one variable at a time. A controlled test with a known working client can help isolate whether the fault is specific to the restreamer, but keep the source URI, credentials, transport, and network path the same where possible.
Use TCP and UDP tests to isolate the media path
RTSP implementations may negotiate UDP media or interleave media over the RTSP TCP connection. FFmpeg documents both transport choices. A TCP test can help identify a blocked or misrouted UDP path when both endpoints support TCP; it is not a universal fix, and it will not repair a bad URI, refused credentials, or an unsupported transport.
For a controlled FFplay test using TCP, replace the example host and path with your endpoint’s values:
ffplay -rtsp_transport tcp "rtsp://HOST:PORT/PATH"
Use the appropriate scheme and endpoint configuration for your source. Avoid putting credentials in a command that may be saved in shell history or copied into shared logs. If the server rejects TCP or playback still fails, inspect the server’s accepted Transport and return to the actual network path rather than assuming TCP is required.

RTSP response codes and what to check first
| Code | Meaning | First useful check |
|---|---|---|
| 400 | The request syntax could not be understood. | Inspect the exact method, URI, and headers; correct the malformed request rather than repeating it unchanged. |
| 401 | Authentication is required or the supplied credentials were refused. | Check the account or stream credentials and the authentication challenge. |
| 403 | The request was understood but refused. | Check access policy and permissions. Retrying unchanged credentials is not the prescribed recovery. |
| 404 | No matching request-URI resource was found. | Check the path, stream name, and whether the resource is available. A 404 alone does not tell you which of these caused it. |
| 454 | The session identifier is missing, invalid, or timed out. | Start a fresh session and follow the server’s current session response. RFC 7826, Section 17.4.18, says: “The RTSP session identifier in the Session header is missing, is invalid, or has timed out.” |
| 455 | The method is not valid in the current state. | Check the request sequence and the methods allowed at that stage. |
| 461 | The requested Transport specification is not supported. |
Compare the requested and supported transports, then select a mode supported by both endpoints. |
| 472 | A proxy failed to establish a secure connection to the next-hop agent, primarily associated with a fatal TLS handshake failure. | Check the proxy-to-server TLS handshake and compatibility. This is not a generic label for every client-side certificate error. |
These meanings are specified in RFC 7826. If the status code is different, preserve its exact value and consult the relevant server or camera documentation rather than treating every response as an HTTP error.
Diagnose RTSPS and TLS handshake failures
RTSPS adds a TLS-handshake and certificate-trust check. If the connection fails before the client receives an RTSP response, start with TLS rather than changing RTSP credentials or media transport.
- Check that the certificate is valid and trusted by the client, and that its identity matches the hostname used to connect.
- Check the client’s CA certificates and whether the expected hostname and SNI are being used.
- Review TLS error text and supported parameters in the documentation for the particular client, relay, and TLS library. FFmpeg documents CA-file and TLS-verification options; hostname-matching behavior can depend on the linked TLS library.
- Do not disable certificate verification as a production fix. Resolve the trust, identity, or compatibility issue instead.
RFC 7826 defines responses in the 470–472 range for secure-connection authorization, credentials, or connection failures. In particular, 472 concerns a proxy’s failure to establish a secure connection to its next hop; it does not describe every local certificate-validation failure.

If the video starts, then freezes or drops
First establish which segment is unstable: source-to-relay or relay-to-viewer. Compare the timing of interruptions with logs and media arrival at each point. Do not assume that a viewer symptom identifies the source as the cause.

It also recommends checking network settings and possible interference from security software, VPNs, and networking hardware. Those are general network checks; the guide concerns OBS output and does not establish RTSP-specific defaults.

If the failure persists, send the camera or server administrator—or the network operator—the sanitized capture you recorded. Include the failing hop, software versions, first failed method, status code and headers, negotiated transport, and TLS error text where relevant. Never send a URI containing a password, token, or stream key in a public post.
