A follow-me service routes incoming calls to a configured phone number or device so callers can reach you through a number associated with the service. Depending on the phone system, calls may go to one destination, ring several destinations together, or move through destinations in sequence. “Follow me” is an umbrella label, not one universal feature with identical controls on every carrier or business phone system.
What “follow me service” means
In everyday phone-service and business-phone usage, a follow-me service is a call-routing feature: a telephone system forwards or routes incoming calls toward a destination where the intended person may be reachable. Related labels include call forwarding, single-number reach, and find-me/follow-me.

The feature is supplied by a carrier or telephone system. It is not a handset or accessory on its own. The system may let a caller dial an established number while the service directs the call elsewhere, but the available destinations and routing behavior depend on the provider and configuration.
Why the term can mean different things
Mobile-network standards usage
In ETSI/3GPP TS 22.094, “Follow Me” has a narrower, specific definition: mobile subscriber A can change the Follow Me data associated with party B so that, under certain conditions, later calls directed to B are forwarded to A. This standards meaning is not the only way phone providers use the phrase.

Single-number reach
In its discussion of “find me/follow me,” the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission describes the idea of reaching a customer through one number. A virtual number can be configured to forward calls regardless of the customer’s location; Bell Canada’s tariff is an example of a provider describing Single Number Reach.
Business VoIP and PBX routing
In a business phone system, follow-me routing may send calls to alternative destinations when a phone is offline or unregistered, returns an error, or does not answer within a configured interval. A system may also associate destinations with time periods. These are configuration choices, not features guaranteed by the name alone.

How a follow-me service may route a call
Depending on the provider and setup, the system may use one or more of these patterns:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- One destination: forward calls from the service number to a selected number or device.
- Simultaneous ringing: ring multiple configured destinations at the same time.
- Sequential routing: try one destination and then another if the call is not answered or another configured condition occurs.
- Conditional routing: use a different destination when a line is busy, offline, unreachable, or unanswered.
- Scheduled routing: direct calls to different destinations during specified periods.
For example, one provider’s find-me/follow-me offering describes simultaneous and sequential ringing, including schedules. That is an example of a particular product, not a universal definition. Calendar-based routing has also appeared in a patent describing a system that checks calendar information to choose a number; it should be understood as a specific design, not a standard promise of follow-me service.

How implementations compare
| Usage | What the term describes | Routing detail established by the cited example |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile standards feature | A subscriber changes Follow Me data associated with another party. | Under certain conditions, later calls to that party are forwarded to the subscriber (ETSI/3GPP TS 22.094). |
| Single-number reach | A virtual or associated number provides a way to reach a customer at another location. | A number can be configured to forward calls regardless of the customer’s location (CRTC Telecom Decision 2006-79; Bell Canada General Tariff). |
| Business VoIP/PBX | A phone system routes calls to alternative destinations. | PortaOne documents routing for an unregistered/offline phone, an error, or no answer within a configured interval, with destinations that can be associated with time periods. |
| Provider find-me/follow-me configuration | A provider feature for reaching someone at multiple destinations. | AccessDirect describes simultaneous or sequential routing, including schedules. |
| Calendar-integrated design | A specialized call-routing implementation. | U.S. Patent 6,879,672 describes consulting calendar data to select a number; this is not established as a normal service feature. |
What to check before relying on one
Because providers use the label for different configurations, confirm the behavior in the documentation for your carrier or PBX administrator. In particular, check:
- Whether calls go to one destination or can reach several.
- Whether configured phones ring together or in sequence.
- Which conditions trigger a route change, such as busy, no answer, or offline status.
- Whether schedules are available and who can change them.
- Whether you can activate or update destinations remotely.
- Which destination types and locations are supported, and how caller ID, voicemail, and charges for forwarded calls are handled.
There is no universal activation code, charge, caller-ID rule, or voicemail behavior established by the term itself. Those details are provider- and configuration-specific.
