A dual-WAN router connects to two internet paths and can use them for backup, traffic distribution, or both. It does not automatically provide two internet services, switch without interruption, or combine both connections into the speed of one download. Those details depend on the router’s features and configuration.
What does “dual WAN” mean?
WAN stands for wide area network; on a home or business router, a WAN interface connects to an internet service. A dual-WAN router has two supported WAN paths and routing controls for deciding how traffic uses them. The paths might come from separate internet providers or different access technologies, such as fixed broadband and cellular service.

The term describes the router’s capability, not what is included with it. You need two usable connections and a compatible way to connect each one. Depending on the model, the second path may use a dedicated WAN port, a configurable LAN port, USB, or another supported interface. ASUS documents several such arrangements, but support varies by model: ASUS dual-WAN setup guide.
How do failover and load balancing differ?
Failover keeps a backup link ready
In failover mode, one WAN connection is primary and the other is held in reserve. The router checks connectivity and directs traffic to the backup when its configured checks indicate the primary has failed. ASUS describes checks such as pings or DNS queries and an optional failback setting that returns traffic to the primary link when it is working again: ASUS dual-WAN setup guide.

Switching depends on the router’s detection method, interval, and failure threshold. A cable or interface can remain physically connected even when the internet service beyond it is unreachable, so check whether the router can test end-to-end reachability rather than only detecting a disconnected link. A switch may also interrupt active sessions; do not assume it will be instantaneous or seamless. Fortinet describes both link redundancy and load-sharing configurations for dual internet connections: Fortinet dual internet connections.
Load balancing shares traffic across links
In load-balancing mode, both links can be active and the router distributes traffic according to its implementation and settings. This may spread separate connections or sessions across the available WAN paths. Cisco’s RV34x documentation describes outgoing load balancing per IP connection, distinguishing it from channel bonding: Cisco RV34x load-balancing guide.

That distinction matters: load balancing generally does not turn two ISP plans into one faster connection for a single download or other individual session. One session may use one WAN path while other sessions use the other. ASUS similarly explains that its load-balancing feature separates internet sessions rather than creating one combined bandwidth rate: ASUS dual-WAN setup guide.

Some routers support both approaches
Depending on the product, you may be able to configure redundancy, load sharing, or a combination. Vendor terminology and available controls differ, so confirm the exact behavior in the router’s documentation rather than assuming that every device offers the same modes.

Do you need two internet providers?
No. Dual WAN requires two compatible internet paths, not necessarily two different providers. The links could be separate services from different providers, or they could use different access technologies. A cellular gateway, for example, can serve as a secondary WAN when the router, gateway, and service support that arrangement.
ASUS describes USB and Ethernet as possible secondary-WAN connections on supported models, while Zyxel documents an example using wired broadband as the primary link and a 5G router as the secondary link. These are examples of possible setups, not a guarantee that arbitrary devices will work together: ASUS dual-WAN setup guide; Zyxel secondary-WAN example.

What to check before choosing or configuring one
- Supported interfaces: Check the exact router model and firmware for dual-WAN support, and confirm how each connection plugs in.
- Intended mode: Decide whether you need a standby connection, traffic distribution, or both. For load balancing, check for configurable weights, distribution methods, or policy-based routing if you need control over which traffic uses which link.
- Failover behavior: Review the health-check target, interval, failure threshold, standby behavior, and whether the router supports failback to the primary link.
- Performance expectations: Treat load balancing as a way to distribute sessions, not as channel bonding for one connection. Check whether any WAN aggregation feature is separate and whether enabling one mode affects another.
- Feature compatibility: Verify how the chosen mode affects IPv6, hardware acceleration, DDNS, inbound hosting, and port forwarding. ASUS warns that DDNS and port forwarding may not work normally with its documented load-balancing configuration; that limitation should not be assumed to apply to every brand or model: ASUS dual-WAN limitations.
- Second-link terms: Check the provider’s price, data allowance, coverage, and performance for the specific plan. These vary by service and location; there is no universal cost or performance profile for a backup WAN.
What dual WAN does—and does not—promise
| Capability | What it means | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Dual-WAN hardware and routing | The router supports two WAN paths and can route traffic using them. | That two internet services are included or that every type of modem or connection is compatible. |
| Failover | The router can switch traffic to a backup after its configured checks detect a failure. | That detection is instantaneous, every failure will be detected, or active sessions will continue without interruption. |
| Load balancing | The router distributes traffic or sessions across active links. | That one download or individual connection will run at the combined speed of both plans. |
| Both modes | Some products let users combine redundancy and traffic sharing. | That all dual-WAN routers provide the same modes, controls, or compatibility. |
