No consumer chatbot prompt should be treated as confidential just because you ask the bot to keep it private. A service may retain a conversation, use it for model improvement, process it for safety, or make it available for human review under certain conditions. Those are separate questions—and the current evidence does not support a defensible overall ranking of the major chatbots from most to least invasive.
Are AI prompts private?
Not by default in the sense most people mean by “private.” A prompt is handled under the provider’s terms and settings, not protected by a promise in the conversation itself. Before entering sensitive material, consider whether the service may use chats for model improvement, how deletion works, whether safety or feedback exceptions apply, and whether your account is personal or managed by an organization.

Privacy is not a single setting. Training use, chat history, memory or personalization, deletion, retention, and safety processing can each work differently. Turning off one does not necessarily turn off the others.

A fair ranking would need to compare the same account type, region, date, and set of criteria for every chatbot. It would also need to show how it weighs different trade-offs: an easy training opt-out does not answer how long flagged chats are retained, and keeping a chat in history does not by itself mean it is used for training.

Current first-party evidence available for this comparison is strongest for consumer ChatGPT and Claude. It does not establish current first-party rules for Gemini, Copilot, Meta AI, or Grok, or a measured privacy score for any service. An academic comparison of six developers is useful for identifying policy dimensions, but it is a study snapshot, not a current audit of each company’s rules. For that reason, the comparison below describes documented policies rather than naming an overall winner or loser.
ChatGPT: training controls, temporary chats, and workspace differences
OpenAI’s Help Center page “Data controls in ChatGPT,” current as of October 7, 2026, says the relevant settings are under Settings > Data controls. Turning off Improve the model for everyone means new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models. It does not remove those conversations from chat history, so training use and saved history remain distinct controls.

Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models. OpenAI says they may nevertheless be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Temporary mode therefore changes several forms of use and visibility; it is not a guarantee of zero retention.
Memory and personalization are separate from model training, and disabling them does not disable safety features. OpenAI also says submitting thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback may make the entire associated conversation available for training. Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspace content is not used for training by default, but organization-level retention, access, and other policies still apply. Those workspace terms should not be assumed to describe a personal account.

OpenAI’s separate explanation of foundation-model development describes the use of publicly available internet material, partner data, human trainer and researcher contributions, and synthetic data, alongside steps intended to reduce personal information. That broader account of model development is not the same thing as the consumer chat control: it does not supply one universal retention period for training data.
Claude: deletion, improvement settings, and policy exceptions
Anthropic’s consumer training guidance, dated March 16, 2026, says chats and coding sessions may be used to improve Claude if the user allows it, if safety systems flag a conversation, or if the user otherwise explicitly opts in. Incognito chats are not used for improvement, even when Model Improvement is enabled. Feedback is a separate case: Anthropic says the associated conversation may be retained for up to five years and may be used for service analysis, research, user-behavior study, and training as permitted by law.

Anthropic’s retention guidance, dated July 1, 2026, says a user-deleted conversation disappears from chat history immediately and is removed from backend storage within 30 days. If a user allows chats or coding sessions to improve Claude, data may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years in training pipelines. The guidance says this applies to new or resumed chats after the setting is enabled. Turning the setting off prevents previous or new chats from being used for future model training, but cannot remove data from training runs already in progress or models already trained.

Anthropic describes longer, specific exceptions for content flagged as a Usage Policy violation: inputs and outputs may be retained for up to two years, and trust-and-safety classification scores for up to seven years. Feedback-associated data may be retained for five years, and legal or dispute needs can also require retention. These are policy-stated exceptions, not the ordinary timeframe for a user-deleted chat.

This is a policy comparison, not a ranking of overall invasiveness. The cited statements describe provider policies; they are not independently measured guarantees of actual retention or access.
Can people at the company read chatbot chats?
The cited policies establish that feedback and safety handling can create exceptions to a simple “training off” or “deleted” assumption, but they do not provide a like-for-like account of when employees can view ordinary chats across both services. The available material therefore cannot support a blanket claim that people do—or do not—read a particular user’s conversation. Review the current policy for the account you use, especially before submitting feedback or sharing content that could trigger a safety review.

What to check before entering sensitive information
- Check the account context. Confirm whether you are using a personal account or an organization-managed workspace; workspace defaults and administrator rules can differ.
- Review model-improvement settings. In ChatGPT, open Settings > Data controls and check Improve the model for everyone. In Claude, check Model Improvement in Privacy Settings. Confirm whether a change covers future chats, prior chats, or both.
- Use temporary or incognito mode only with realistic expectations. These modes change how chats are handled, but do not necessarily eliminate safety retention or other policy exceptions.
- Keep deletion, training, history, and memory distinct. Deleting a conversation is not the same as excluding it from training; hiding it from history or disabling memory is not a general privacy switch.
- Avoid submitting feedback on a sensitive conversation. Feedback can make the associated conversation available for additional uses or retention under the provider’s policy.
- Do not enter information that must remain confidential. If disclosure would create a serious personal, professional, or legal risk, do not rely on a chatbot setting as a confidentiality guarantee.
