What Is a Disk on Module (DOM)? Definition, Uses, and Compatibility

A disk on module is compact flash storage that connects directly to a compatible host and behaves like disk storage. Interfaces, connectors, power, and endurance vary by model.

A disk on module (DOM) is a compact flash-storage device that connects directly to a compatible computer or server interface and appears to the host as disk storage. Intel describes a DOM as flash memory that emulates an ordinary magnetic hard disk drive. The term names a type of storage, not a universal connector: SATA, PATA/IDE, USB, and ZIF versions exist, and they are not automatically interchangeable.

How a disk on module works

A DOM stores data in flash memory and connects to a host through an interface such as SATA or PATA/IDE. To the computer, it behaves like a disk, so it can be used for tasks such as booting an operating system. Intel’s installation guide for the Intel Storage System SSR212MA defines a DOM as a flash device that “emulates an ordinary magnetic hard disk drive.” Intel’s DOM installation guide describes one IDE-connected implementation.

A DOM is not necessarily a standard 2.5-inch SSD. Its small module form factor and direct connection are part of the design; its exact shape, interface, and power arrangement depend on the product.

What DOMs are used for

DOMs are commonly used where a system needs compact, directly connected storage, especially for boot or embedded functions. Supermicro lists uses including boot, recovery, licensing, and operating-system installation. Supplier descriptions also identify embedded systems, industrial computers, servers, and thin clients as applications. These are examples, not a guarantee that any DOM will work in every system of those types.

DOM interfaces and connector types

“DOM” describes a category rather than one standard plug. Match the module’s interface to the host before considering capacity or price.

DOM family What to check
SATA Confirm the host supports the specific SATA connection and check whether the DOM uses a 7-pin or 22-pin design, its orientation, clearance, and power requirements. Active Media Products’ SATA DOM overview describes design variants.
PATA/IDE Use only with a compatible legacy host. Check whether the design is 40-pin or 44-pin and whether its physical layout fits. A PATA/IDE DOM is not a replacement for a SATA DOM. Fortasa’s PATA/IDE module page describes this family.
USB or ZIF These are other product-family options; verify the exact host interface and connector rather than assuming compatibility from the DOM label. Active Media Products’ DOM overview lists multiple interface families.

How to check compatibility before buying

  1. Identify the host interface. Check the computer or board documentation to determine whether it supports SATA, PATA/IDE, USB, ZIF, or another specific connection. A SATA port alone does not establish compatibility with every SATA DOM.
  2. Match connector geometry. Confirm pin count, orientation (vertical, horizontal, or offset), module profile, and physical clearance around nearby components.
  3. Check power requirements. Some modules use a particular power arrangement. Supermicro says its listed SuperDOM does not require a 5V power cable while retaining backward compatibility with boards that require one; that product-specific feature should not be assumed for other DOMs. See Supermicro’s SATA DOM information.
  4. Choose capacity and endurance for the workload. Size the module for the operating system and data it must hold, then check its endurance rating against expected write activity. NAND flash has finite program/erase cycles; “industrial” in a product name does not by itself establish a particular lifespan. Supermicro explains the need to match flash endurance to the intended work pattern on its SATA DOM page.
  5. For industrial environments, verify the exact model’s specifications. Check the current datasheet for temperature range and other environmental requirements. Industrial DOM products can differ in features and ratings; catalog information should not be generalized to every model. See ADATA’s industrial catalog.

Power, capacity, and endurance: claims to interpret carefully

Supermicro’s undated product page, accessed in 2026, states that its SATA DOMs use about 1–2 W compared with 6–7 W for an HDD. This is the manufacturer’s comparison for its products, not an independently verified figure for all DOMs and hard drives. The same page lists SuperDOM capacities of 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB; availability can change, so check the current listing for a specific model.

  • Product features: This module uses serial Nor flash external memory expansion chip W25Q64. And supports SPI interface.
  • Product parameters: Capacity: 64m-bit/8m-byte Clock frequency: ≤104mhz Working voltage: 2.7~3.6V Size: 14mm * 16mm
  • Application range: This module can be used in experimental scenarios such as home, office and industrial electrical experiments
  • Good experience:Buy our module and use it, you will find it very convenient
  • Item Condition: The module is 100% made of original electronic components, and the product is a brand new product, you can buy it with confidence

Like other NAND flash storage, a DOM has finite write-cycle endurance. A module’s expected service life depends on its specific rating and the workload, so it is not accurate to claim that every DOM lasts longer than every hard disk drive.

DOM versus SSD

A DOM is flash storage that the host treats as a disk, much like an SSD at the level of its basic role. The distinction is chiefly form factor and connection: DOMs are compact modules intended to connect directly to a compatible host interface, while “SSD” covers a broader range of products and sizes. A DOM should not be assumed to fit a standard SSD bay or work with a host simply because both use flash memory.
