HD Audio Sources Explained: What Counts as High-Resolution Audio?

HD audio usually means a digital format above CD’s 44.1 kHz/16-bit PCM reference, but resolution labels alone do not prove a recording’s provenance or audible advantage.

HD audio sources are recordings or files delivered at higher sample rates or bit depths than CD audio’s 44.1 kHz, 16-bit PCM reference. A common example is 96 kHz/24-bit PCM, but there is no single universal cutoff—and the format label alone does not prove that the recording contains more original detail or will sound better.

What does “HD audio” mean?

“HD audio,” also called high-resolution audio, generally describes digital audio with a sample rate, bit depth, or both above the CD reference of 44.1 kHz and 16-bit PCM. The Audio Engineering Society describes the term in relation to formats that exceed those CD figures, while noting that resolution figures are delivery modes within a larger audio-processing chain (AES, “High-Resolution Audio”).

There is no universally accepted threshold. Sony gives 96 kHz/24-bit or higher as a typical example, not a single binding definition (Sony, “What is High-Resolution audio?”; support article last modified 2026-01-20).

What do sample rate and bit depth describe?

  • Sample rate is how often the digital system samples the audio signal, measured in hertz (Hz). A rate of 96 kHz means 96,000 samples per second.
  • Bit depth is the number of bits used for each sample. A 24-bit file uses more bits per sample than the 16-bit CD reference.

These are separate properties: a file’s sample rate and bit depth describe its digital representation, not by themselves the quality or origin of the recording. The AES identifies 44.1 kHz and 16 bits as the CD comparison point (AES).

What counts as an HD audio source?

Native-resolution digital releases

A digital release delivered in PCM or DSD at high resolution can be an HD audio source. The Library of Congress prefers native-resolution files for preservation and identifies 96 kHz/24-bit or higher PCM and 2.8 MHz or higher DSD as preferences for released high-resolution files. These are preservation recommendations, not a universal industry definition (Library of Congress, Recommended Formats Statement – Audio Works).

Lossless PCM files such as FLAC

FLAC is a lossless codec for PCM audio. It can preserve CD-quality PCM or audio at higher rates and bit depths, so seeing “FLAC” does not establish that a file is high-resolution. Check the file’s actual sample rate and bit depth as well as the source and mastering information, if available (RFC 9639: Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC), 2024).

Uncompressed PCM in a supported container

High-resolution PCM can also be carried as uncompressed audio in a compatible file container. ISO/IEC 23003-5:2020 specifies carriage of uncompressed LPCM audio in the MPEG-4 family of files (ISO/IEC 23003-5:2020). The container or file extension alone does not establish the audio’s resolution or provenance.

DSD releases

DSD is a different digital audio representation from PCM. The Library of Congress lists 2.8 MHz or higher DSD among its high-resolution release preferences; this figure is its preservation guidance rather than a universal cutoff (Library of Congress).

How to tell whether a source is genuinely high-resolution

A large number in a file’s properties is not enough to show that the original recording or master contained more detail. The Library of Congress prefers native-resolution files over upsampled ones; this means a lower-resolution source converted to a higher sample rate does not establish a higher-resolution original. It does not mean that every high-rate file has been upsampled.

  1. Check provenance: look for information about the source recording and mastering, including whether the release was made from a native high-resolution master.
  2. Check encoding: determine whether the file is lossless or lossy. Lossless describes whether the encoding preserves its input data; it does not mean the input was above CD resolution.
  3. Check the actual format figures: verify the sample rate and bit depth for PCM, or the relevant rate for DSD, rather than relying on a “HD” or “Hi-Res” label.

This separates three questions that are easy to conflate: where the audio came from, whether encoding preserved it, and what resolution the delivered file reports. The AES also cautions that format figures sit within a broader processing chain, including the relevance of bandwidth beyond typical human hearing (AES).

Does HD audio sound better than CD?

A high-resolution label is not a guarantee of audible improvement. The sources cited here do not establish a universal audible advantage for every listener, recording, playback chain, or listening environment. A higher sample rate or bit depth alone is not proof that a release will sound better; its mastering and the rest of the playback chain also matter.

What equipment is needed to play HD audio?

The source file, playback software, device, and output chain must work with the format being played. Sony lists Walkman players, headphones, headphone amplifiers, speakers, and other product categories among those optimized for High-Res Audio, but compatibility varies by product (Sony). Check the specific device’s supported formats and rates; the label on one component does not establish that every part of a setup supports every high-resolution format.
