Realtime Authorization and Presence Checks for Auction Notifications

An open socket is not proof that a bidder remains authorized. Build auction notifications around explicit scope checks, event cursors, replay limits and failure tests.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A connected socket proves only that a transport is open; it does not prove that a bidder is still authorized to receive updates for a particular auction or lot. Reliable auction notifications require separate checks for authorization, connection presence, channel subscription and event progress—and tests for the moments when those facts get out of sync.

What a realtime bidder contract must prove

Define the guarantees the application must enforce rather than treating a successful connection as a complete delivery contract. Keep four facts distinct:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Authorization: whether a principal may receive information for a specific auction and set of lots, and until when.
  • Presence: whether a connection—or one or more connections for a principal—is currently live under the transport’s definition.
  • Subscription: which principal is associated with which channel or stream, and under what authorization decision.
  • Event progress: which business event was produced, delivered, processed and, where applicable, acknowledged.

A server-side subscription record can bind the principal to an auction, permitted lot IDs, an authorization expiry and a monotonically increasing subscription epoch. Give each business event a stable identifier and an auction cursor. That lets the service evaluate scope and progress independently of stale state held by a client.

Where to check authorization

Check authorization when creating a subscription and again at the publish or delivery boundary appropriate to the threat model. The server should be able to establish the principal, allowed auction and lots, expiry, active subscription epoch and event position for each protected delivery; it should not rely on a client’s earlier authorization result.

Revoke or expire authority independently of closing the socket. A connection may remain open after its token expires. On reconnect, bind the new connection to fresh authorization and a new epoch. Delayed frames from an older connection must not inherit the authority of the new one. These are application design requirements, not properties a transport supplies automatically.

Presence is not authorization—or delivery accuracy

Agree on what “present” means in your system: a live socket, a principal with at least one live connection, or a unique bidder currently online. Multiple devices and simultaneous connections make those definitions materially different. Also define how quickly stale presence is removed after a lost connection.

A heartbeat demonstrates liveness only within the protocol’s terms. OpenSea’s raw WebSocket protocol specifies a heartbeat every 30 seconds and advises reconnecting if a reply has not arrived before the next heartbeat is due. That timing is specific to its protocol; a successful heartbeat does not establish a bidder’s authorization or the accuracy of bidder-to-lot scope. OpenSea Stream API documentation

Reconnect does not mean complete or ordered delivery

Automatic reconnection can restore a connection without restoring missed events. OpenSea describes its Stream API as best effort: messages lost during connection errors are not resent. Its documentation also warns that events can arrive out of order and recommends using event_timestamp to determine ordering. Use stable event identifiers for deduplication and an auction cursor or authoritative event time to order or reconcile state where appropriate.

Recovery needs both a business cursor and a history source that can serve the missing events. ECMWF Aviso’s Server-Sent Events documentation is a useful example of replay mechanics: it describes checkpointing after successful processing, avoiding advancement past unfinished concurrent work, and reconnecting from a sequence cursor. It also warns that retention, deletion, process restarts and replay caps can leave old history unavailable. Those details describe Aviso, not a guarantee for other providers. ECMWF Aviso Notifications API documentation

Before enabling replay, recheck current authorization. A bidder’s allowed lots may have changed while disconnected; replay must not disclose an event for a lot the bidder can no longer access. If the requested cursor predates retained history or a replay limit, detect the gap and resynchronize against an authoritative auction state source rather than silently advancing.

Example Documented contract Implication for an auction system
Faradyn Platform Its electricity-auction documentation describes WebSocket connection events after successful authentication, stable notification IDs that can be acknowledged across connections, and auction lifecycle and submission-update events. A deadline-approaching event is triggered 10 minutes before the bidding period ends. A connected event is explicitly not itself a notification. Treat acknowledgement and event identity as separate from presence; the 10-minute trigger is specific to this platform.
eBay Platform Notifications The documented legacy SOAP notification surface requires an HTTP 200 response. It says a failed notification is not individually resent; event information can be retrieved through its transaction or feedback APIs. Repeated consecutive failures can stop delivery for an application until the issue is addressed. Design for API-based recovery and failure monitoring. This is documented eBay behavior, not a universal webhook rule; verify the current platform and API generation.
OpenSea Stream API The marketplace feed covers events including listings, sales, transfers, metadata changes, cancellations, item bids, collection offers and order invalidation or revalidation. Its SDK reconnects with backoff and resubscribes, but lost messages are not resent. Resubscription helps restore the stream, but does not prove completeness. Use the documented timestamp guidance and reconcile missing state where needed.
ECMWF Aviso SSE Its lifecycle includes a first-event request ID, periodic heartbeat, notification IDs with sequence suffixes, replay control, inclusive replay start IDs and explicit replay caps. Its documentation warns that history can be deleted or lost during restarts or retention. Replay behavior and limits must be part of the client contract. Aviso’s exact limits should not be generalized to another provider.

Compare providers against the same contract

Ably, Pusher Channels, PubNub and self-managed WebSockets are possible options named for this comparison. Ably’s documentation describes pub/sub, presence, history and SSE support—evidence of topical capabilities, not proof that it is the right fit or that it removes application-level authorization work. • Authorization: Can scope be limited by principal, auction and lot? What occurs on expiry or revocation, including for an open connection?
  • Presence: Does presence represent a connection, a principal with one or more connections, or another unit? How quickly does stale presence clear?
  • Reconnect: Is reconnect automatic? Is resubscription automatic, and does it obtain fresh authorization?
  • Completeness: Are missed events replayed? What cursor, retention window, replay limit and gap signal are available?
  • Ordering and duplicates: Can messages arrive out of order or more than once? Which stable IDs and timestamps should the application rely on?
  • Operations and access: Who owns token issuance, revocation, monitoring, replay storage, incident response and failure testing? What credentials, API scopes, marketplace restrictions, rate rules and usage terms apply?

Provider features do not settle whether revocation, reconnect and recovery meet an application’s own contract. The service still needs a defined authorization boundary and a way to detect or repair event gaps. Ably documentation

Test the failure transitions

Include these cases in contract and integration tests. For concurrency and races, write down which operation wins before running the test; an undefined ordering rule is itself a defect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Expire a token while its WebSocket remains open. Verify that the next protected delivery is denied.
  2. Race access revocation against publication. Verify behavior against the documented ordering rule.
  3. Open a second connection for the same principal. Verify whether presence counts connections, devices or unique users.
  4. Deliver the same event twice, then deliver cursor N+1 before N. Verify idempotence and eventual state convergence.
  5. Disconnect during processing and reconnect. Verify the checkpoint advances only after processing completes.
  6. Change a bidder’s allowed lots before replay. Verify that replay does not disclose now-forbidden lot events.
  7. Exhaust replay retention or a configured replay cap. Verify that the client detects a history gap and performs authoritative resynchronization.
  8. Inject realistic network and processing delay, then report measured end-to-end distributions for the deployed geography and workload. Do not choose a latency target without measurements from that deployed path.

Measure more than “socket open”

Record separate signals for authorization outcome, connection state, subscription state, event cursor, delivery attempt, acknowledgement and recovery. A dashboard that shows only an open socket cannot establish whether a bidder was eligible for an event, whether it was processed or whether a gap remains. Use event IDs and cursor progress to investigate duplicates, delays and divergence without confusing them with presence.
