How Much Does Home Wi-Fi Cost per Month? U.S. Internet Prices and Plans

Recent U.S. benchmarks put popular broadband around $69 per month and gigabit plans around $97, but address-specific availability and full plan terms determine your bill.

In the U.S., a useful recent benchmark is about $69 per month for popular broadband plans and $97 per month for gigabit plans. Those are 2025 category averages—not guaranteed prices or plans available at your address. Your actual bill depends on local availability, speed, technology, equipment, and fees.

What do home internet plans typically cost?

USTelecom’s 2026 Broadband Pricing Index reports 2025 averages of $69.33 per month for its BPI-Speed category and $97.34 per month for BPI-Gigabit. The index reported corresponding 2024 averages of $69.98 and $97.27. These are index averages for defined plan categories, not a measure of every household’s bill or a quote for a specific address. USTelecom’s 2026 Broadband Pricing Index explains its benchmarks.

Other published averages differ because they measure different technologies and use different methods. The FCC’s 2024 Urban Rate Survey reported weighted monthly averages for internet-only packages of $70.35 for DSL, $93.91 for cable, $51.28 for fixed wireless, and $160.34 for fiber. Those are the FCC’s 2024 survey figures, not current offers at every location. The FCC’s 2024 Communications Marketplace Report also reviewed advertised standalone plans from the ten largest providers: examples ranged from $30 per month for up to 100 Mbps to $300 per month for about 7 Gbps. The advertised examples are not a national average.

Why can prices differ so much?

Technology and speed

Available connection types can include DSL, cable, fiber, and fixed wireless, and their prices and performance differ. The FCC’s 2024 Urban Rate Survey averages illustrate that spread, but a national category average cannot tell you what a particular provider offers at your home. Higher speed tiers can cost more; for context, USTelecom’s 2025 BPI-Gigabit average was $97.34 per month, compared with $69.33 for BPI-Speed.

Address and provider availability

Internet plans are location-specific. Start by checking which providers and technologies serve your exact address. The FCC National Broadband Map displays provider-reported options by location and technology. Its help page, updated May 15, 2025, explains that consumers can challenge information they believe is inaccurate: FCC instructions for challenging map data.

Promotions, discounts, and fees

A headline price may depend on a limited introductory period, AutoPay, a paperless-billing discount, or a qualifying mobile line. The FCC’s 2024 report distinguishes advertised non-promotional prices and notes that most prices in its collection included a credit-card or paperless-billing discount. Your first bill can also include one-time charges, while recurring equipment or service fees, taxes, and other applicable charges can raise the total.

How to compare plans at your address

  1. Check availability first. Search your address on the FCC map, then confirm the plan and eligibility directly with the provider.
  2. Compare the ongoing price. Find the regular price after any introductory period and note how long a promotion lasts. Check the conditions for AutoPay, paperless billing, bundling, or other discounts.
  3. Match performance to your needs. Compare typical download and upload speeds and latency, not just a plan’s maximum advertised download speed.
  4. Read data and network terms. Check whether data is unlimited or subject to a cap, and review network-management terms that could affect service.
  5. Add fees and obligations. Include monthly equipment or service charges, one-time fees, applicable taxes, contract length, and cancellation conditions in your comparison.
  6. Check what equipment is included. Confirm whether the provider supplies a gateway or router, whether there is a rental charge, and whether any equipment you already own is compatible.

Compare the full terms side by side rather than choosing from a single advertised monthly price. A lower promotional rate may not be the lowest ongoing cost, and the fastest tier may be unnecessary for your household.

A current provider example: T-Mobile 5G Home Internet

As listed on T-Mobile’s plan page accessed October 4, 2026, its Rely, Amplified, and All-In 5G Home Internet plans were $50, $60, and $70 per month, respectively, with AutoPay and before applicable taxes and fees. The page listed lower prices for some qualifying voice-line customers. These are one provider’s listed prices on that date, not a national average; price, availability, and eligibility can change. Check T-Mobile’s current plan terms before relying on them.

The same page listed a gateway, unlimited data, and no annual contract. It described typical speeds as varying with location, signal, time, and network conditions. T-Mobile states, “We won’t raise your internet rate for five years.” That guarantee applies only to eligible plans and has exclusions, including taxes and fees; check the provider’s current terms for details. Will you need to buy a Wi-Fi router?

Not necessarily. Some providers include equipment, while others charge a recurring rental fee or allow compatible customer-owned hardware. For example, T-Mobile’s listed plans included a gateway, and its All-In plan listed an included mesh extender when the page was accessed October 4, 2026. Check your own provider’s equipment terms before buying anything.

A router or mesh system is most relevant if your plan does not include suitable Wi-Fi equipment, or if your home has coverage gaps that one router cannot address. Verify compatibility with your internet service and consider any provider support or rental charges before purchasing; buying hardware does not automatically reduce every internet bill.
