The company may use operating cash, issue shares, or borrow money to buy it. Investors who buy the company’s stock get indirect exposure: they own shares in a business, not a fixed amount of cryptocurrency. That distinction affects the investment’s risks, valuation, and performance.
What a digital asset treasury is—and what it is not
“Digital asset treasury company” is market shorthand, not a standardized legal structure. The Block Research describes DAT companies as publicly traded firms that accumulate cryptoassets as a core business strategy. A company using this approach may also run an operating business, change its investment policy, or use its holdings in different ways.

A DAT is therefore more than crypto sitting in a company account. Its financing, operations, custody arrangements, liquidity needs, accounting, and governance all shape what shareholders own and what risks they bear.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Not direct crypto ownership: Someone who buys coins owns crypto directly, whether held in a wallet or through a platform. A DAT shareholder owns company stock and has indirect exposure through the company.
- Not a conventional cash reserve: Crypto can be much more volatile than cash equivalents and may be less reliable for meeting near-term obligations such as payroll or debt service.
- Not a single uniform structure: Companies differ in the assets they hold, how they finance purchases, and whether they retain, sell, lend, or pledge those assets.
How a company builds and manages a crypto treasury
Set a policy and arrange custody
Management and the board establish a treasury or investment policy, select the digital assets, decide how much capital to allocate, and set up custody and trade execution. Those choices determine how the company buys, safeguards, and accounts for its holdings.

Fund purchases
A company can buy crypto with cash generated by its existing operations, proceeds from issuing shares, or borrowed money. Strategy says it uses all three routes to accumulate Bitcoin. The company describes its approach as follows: “By using proceeds from equity and debt financings, as well as cash flows from our operations, we strategically accumulate Bitcoin and advocate for its role as digital capital.” That is Strategy’s stated rationale, not a guaranteed outcome of the strategy.
These funding routes have different implications. Using operating cash competes with other uses for that cash; selling shares can dilute existing shareholders; and debt creates repayment obligations. If a company borrows against its holdings, falling asset prices can add pressure to refinance, provide collateral, or sell.

Decide what to do with the assets
Holding crypto does not necessarily mean leaving it untouched. Companies may retain assets, sell some to fund operations, lend them, use them as collateral, or undertake other asset-management activities. For example, MARA Holdings’ 2025 Form 10-K describes treasury holdings, lending, trading, borrowing against Bitcoin, and sales. MARA reported approximately 53,822 bitcoin with a carrying value of approximately $4.7 billion as of December 31, 2025; those figures describe that company at that date, not the DAT market as a whole.
How DAT shares differ from owning crypto or buying an ETF
A DAT share does not represent a fixed quantity of crypto. Its value can reflect the company’s holdings, operating business, cash needs, liabilities, financing, share issuance, governance, and investor demand. Some DATs use debt to finance purchases, which can amplify exposure to price moves in either direction, but companies’ structures vary. A DAT share should not automatically be treated as a leveraged ETF.

| Feature | Digital asset treasury company | Crypto ETF |
|---|---|---|
| What the investor owns | Shares in a public company that holds crypto and may have other assets, liabilities, and business lines | Shares in an investment fund designed to track an underlying asset |
| Other business exposure | May include operating revenue, expenses, and non-crypto assets or liabilities | Primarily exposure to the fund’s mandate and underlying asset |
| How crypto purchases may be funded | May use operating cash, equity issuance, or debt | Fund structure is designed to track the asset; the source does not establish a comparable corporate financing model |
| Relationship to crypto’s price | Share value can respond to company and market factors beyond crypto holdings | Designed to track the underlying asset; this does not establish perfect tracking |
| Additional risk checks | Corporate leverage, custody, liquidity, governance, and operating risks, in addition to crypto volatility | Check the individual fund’s prospectus and structure; risks vary by fund |
An ETF and a DAT are different wrappers for exposure, and neither should be assumed to mirror spot crypto perfectly. For a DAT, company-specific developments can move the shares independently of the crypto it holds.
Risks to assess before investing in a DAT
Price swings and reported results
Crypto prices can be highly volatile. When a company’s holdings are large relative to its business, price movements can affect its reported results and how investors value its shares. The magnitude depends on the company’s holdings, financing, and accounting treatment.

Liquidity and forced sales
Digital assets may not serve near-term liquidity needs as reliably as cash, particularly during market disruption. An issuer filing states: “Our holdings of digital assets are and will be less liquid than cash and cash equivalents and may not be able to serve as a source of liquidity for us to the same extent as cash and cash equivalents.” If a company needs cash for operations or obligations, it may have to sell assets at an unfavorable time.

Custody and counterparties
Custodian insolvency, access restrictions, exchange or execution-partner failures, and other counterparty problems can impair a company’s access to assets or affect their value. The custody model and the parties involved are company-specific, so shareholders should look for those details in the company’s filings.

Collateral, debt, and concentration
When crypto is pledged as collateral, a price decline or financing obligation can increase pressure to provide more collateral, refinance, or sell. A company that concentrates a large share of its balance sheet and identity in one volatile asset may see both its financial results and valuation respond sharply to that asset.
Accounting treatment
In its 2026 annual report, an issuer says it adopted ASU 2023-08 and measures its bitcoin at fair value, recognizing fair-value changes in net income each reporting period. That describes the accounting policy in that filing; applicable standards and the assets covered matter, so it should not be treated as a universal statement about every company or digital asset.

Before treating a DAT share as a proxy for crypto, review the company’s latest filings and disclosures for the information that determines how the strategy works in practice:

- Which assets it holds, the reported amounts, and the date of those figures.
- How purchases are funded, including debt, equity issuance, and cash from operations.
- Whether assets are held, lent, traded, pledged as collateral, or sold, and under what policies.
- Who provides custody and trade execution, and what the company discloses about access and counterparty risks.
- How much the operating business, other assets, liabilities, and cash needs matter alongside the crypto holdings.
- What accounting policy applies to the holdings and how changes in value affect reported results.
The Block Research reported more than 200 public companies using variations of the DAT model across a dozen cryptoassets in an update dated June 3, 2026. That is a secondary-source industry count, not an official census, and it is date-specific.
