It may supply storage through a cloud service or another hosted or managed arrangement. In cloud storage, data is kept on infrastructure accessed over a network; the provider supplies the service, while the customer uses it to store and retrieve data.
What does “data storage provider” mean?
The phrase is a plain-language description, not a single formal term defined by the sources cited here. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines a cloud provider as “the entity (a person or an organization) responsible for making a service available to interested parties.” Applied to storage, a data storage provider is the entity that makes a storage service available. That broader description can include cloud services as well as other hosted or managed storage arrangements.

NIST’s cloud-computing definition describes network access to a shared pool of computing resources, including storage. Its publication, NIST SP 800-145, was authored by Peter Mell and Timothy Grance and published in September 2011; NIST’s publication page notes an update on May 7, 2026.

What does a storage provider do?
For a cloud storage service, the provider makes storage capacity available and operates the underlying service so users can store and access data over a network. Depending on the service, the provider may manage infrastructure, storage software, and service delivery. The exact division of work depends on the cloud service model and the provider’s terms.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
NIST’s reference architecture describes cloud providers as acquiring and managing computing infrastructure, running cloud software, and arranging delivery through network access. That general role does not mean every storage provider assumes every responsibility for a customer’s data or account.
How are a provider, a service, and an app different?
These terms refer to different parts of the arrangement:
Rank #2
- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Provider: the person or organization that makes the service available.
- Service: the storage capability offered to customers.
- Application: a way to access or use the service.
Microsoft illustrates the distinction by describing OneDrive as a cloud-based storage service and Azure as the cloud platform provider on which it runs. A storage app or sync tool, therefore, is not automatically the underlying provider. See Microsoft’s explanation of cloud services.
What are the main types of cloud storage?
Object, file, and block storage are common ways of organizing and accessing data. They are storage forms, not categories of provider. AWS describes the three types as follows:
Rank #3
- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
| Storage form | How data is organized or accessed |
|---|---|
| Object storage | Stores data as objects, commonly suited to large collections of unstructured data. |
| File storage | Organizes data in files and folders. |
| Block storage | Divides data into blocks that can be managed as separate units. |
The right form depends on the workload and how applications need to read and write data. AWS provides an overview of cloud storage and its storage types.
Does the provider handle all security and management?
No. Responsibilities vary with the service model. In infrastructure as a service (IaaS), the provider supplies the underlying physical computing, storage, and networking infrastructure, while the customer has more control over the software stack. With software as a service (SaaS), the provider manages more of the application and infrastructure. Platform as a service (PaaS) is another common model between those broad arrangements; the precise responsibilities depend on the service.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
Even when a provider operates the storage infrastructure, customers may still need to manage account security, access settings, data governance, backups, or regulatory obligations. The applicable division should be checked in the service documentation and contract. NIST discusses provider roles in its cloud computing reference architecture; Google summarizes the common IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS service models.

What should you check when evaluating a provider?
For a definition alone, it is enough to know that the provider makes the storage service available. If you are comparing services, examine the details that determine whether one fits your needs:
Best Value
- [Upgraded Version] - This external hard drive features a mirrored logo stripe combined with a striped anti-slip design, and the rounded corners of the casing make it easier to grip. The stripes also have a heat dissipation function, ensuring stable and fast data transfer.
- 【Ultra-thin and quiet】 - The motherboard adopts JMicron 578 noise-free solution, giving you a quiet working environment. Lightweight and portable size designed to fit in your pocket for easy portability.
- 【Ultra-Fast Data Transfers】 - Pairing this external hard drive with JMicron 578 solution USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 interfaces enables blazing-fast data transfer. It boasts theoretical read speeds of up to 125MB/s and write speeds of up to 103MB/s.
- 【Plug and Play】 - With no software to install, just plug it in and the drive is ready to use.The hard disk chip is wrapped with an aluminum anti-interference layer to increase heat dissipation and protect data.
- 【What You Get】 - 1 x Portable Hard Drive, 1 x USB 3.0 Cable, 1 x User Manual, Gift-type shell packaging ,Three-year manufacturer's warranty and free technical support services.
- Workload and access: whether the service offers the storage form and access pattern your applications require.
- Management and control: which infrastructure, software, and administrative tasks the provider handles and which remain yours.
- Availability and durability: what commitments the provider documents and the conditions attached to them.
- Security and data location: which protections and location options are specified for the service.
- Pricing and data transfer: how storage, requests, and data leaving the service are charged under the current terms.
These terms and features vary by provider and service, so a general definition cannot establish which product is best or what a particular plan includes.
