It is usually one component of a complete CPU cooling solution, which may also use a fan or, in a liquid cooler, a pump and radiator.
What a CPU heat sink does
A processor produces heat as it operates. The heat sink conducts that heat away from the CPU package and distributes it over a larger surface. Its fins expose more area to the surrounding air, helping heat leave the hardware.

People often use “heat sink” and “CPU cooler” interchangeably, but they can refer to different things. The heat sink is the conductive, finned heat-spreading part. A CPU cooler or thermal solution can mean the full assembly, including a fan—or the liquid-circulation parts and radiator in a liquid-cooled system.
How heat travels from the CPU to the cooler
In a typical desktop processor, the integrated heat spreader (IHS) is the metal lid over the CPU package. Heat passes from the processor to the IHS, then through thermal interface material (TIM) into the cooler’s contact surface. From there, the cooler’s base and heat-sink structure conduct heat to the fins. Air moving across the fins carries it away. Intel explains that TIM fills microscopic surface imperfections and voids between the IHS and cooler surface (Intel’s thermal-solution and thermal-paste guidance, reviewed March 10, 2023).

Air cooling and liquid cooling
Air cooler
An air cooler transfers heat through TIM to a conductive base, then into the heat-sink body and fins. A fan moves air across the fins. In some compact or basic designs, the fan and heat sink form a single fan-heatsink assembly.
Liquid cooler
A liquid cooler moves heat from the processor area through circulating liquid to a radiator, where it is released to the surrounding air. It uses a different route for transporting heat, but still needs an appropriate contact interface at the CPU and a place for heat to dissipate. The right design depends on the system’s space and hardware support; Intel advises checking that the case and other components accommodate the selected cooling solution (Intel’s CPU cooler overview).

What influences heat-sink performance
- Surface area: More fin area can expose more surface to cooling air.
- Heat-transfer path: Heat must travel from the CPU contact surface through the base and into the fins; a direct, effective conductive path helps.
- Material and dimensions: Thermal conductivity and the path’s size and shape affect how heat moves through the cooler.
- Contact quality: A suitable, even interface between the CPU’s IHS and cooler helps transfer heat into the cooler.
- Air movement: Fins can only release heat effectively if air can move across them and out of the case.
Intel’s older Pentium III thermal design guide gives an illustrative example: a component with a heat sink rated at 2 °C/W would rise 2 °C for each watt of heat dissipated under that example’s assumptions. This is an engineering illustration from approximately 2002, not a rating for modern CPU coolers or a universal performance figure (Intel Pentium III Processor Thermal Design Guide).

A CPU needs a thermal solution that transfers heat away and keeps it within its operating limits. A heat sink is the heat-spreading component in a conventional air cooler; a liquid cooler also needs a CPU contact assembly and a way to move heat to its radiator. Intel describes the goal of thermal management as keeping the processor at or below its maximum operating temperature (Intel’s boxed-processor thermal-management guidance, reviewed February 6, 2025).

Does a CPU need thermal paste between it and the heat sink?
A thermal interface material is required between the IHS and the cooler’s contact surface. It fills microscopic imperfections so the surfaces make a more effective thermal connection. TIM may be supplied separately or already applied to a boxed cooler, so check the cooler’s instructions before adding any. When reinstalling a processor or cooler, remove the old material and apply fresh TIM rather than layering new material over used TIM (Intel’s TIM application guidance, reviewed January 30, 2025).

- Confirm socket and mounting support. Check that the cooler includes mounting hardware for the processor socket and motherboard.
- Match cooling capacity to the processor. Use the processor’s current specifications and the cooler’s stated support; do not assume a cooler suitable for one CPU will be sufficient for another.
- Check physical clearance. Confirm the cooler fits the case and does not conflict with the motherboard or nearby components. For a liquid cooler, also confirm radiator mounting space.
- Consider airflow and design. An air cooler needs suitable airflow through the case; a liquid cooler needs room and support for its radiator and circulation hardware.
- Check the TIM situation. Verify whether the cooler includes pre-applied TIM or whether you need to supply it separately.
- Verify the exact processor package. Not every retail CPU includes a cooler. Intel’s list of boxed desktop processor models that ship without an Intel fan heatsink is updated by model, so check the exact SKU’s package contents (Intel boxed desktop processor list, reviewed March 11, 2026).
