What makes a device a computer?
A computer works with information by following instructions in software. Its physical parts are called hardware; its programs and apps are called software. A personal computer brings these together so you can enter information, work with it, save it, view it, and share it.

A keyboard, mouse, and screen are common parts of a desktop setup, though components can be separate or built into one all-in-one unit. For ordinary use, start with your intended tasks, the places you will use the device, the space available, and what feels comfortable. A desktop is not automatically better than a laptop, and portability is not useful to everyone. The Microsoft guide advises weighing context, space, mobility, battery life, and comfort rather than starting with processor names.

How can you make computer use more comfortable?
Small setup adjustments can make a computer easier to view and use. Be Connected’s beginner guidance suggests placing the screen at eye height and close enough to see without straining, positioning the keyboard and mouse comfortably, and adjusting screen brightness for comfortable viewing. These are general tips, not individualized medical or ergonomic advice.

- Adjust the screen position and viewing distance to suit you.
- Arrange the keyboard and mouse so they are comfortable to reach.
- Change brightness if the screen feels too bright or too dim.
What if you need help seeing, hearing, or controlling a computer?
Computers, phones, and tablets often include accessibility features. Depending on the task and the barrier, options such as a screen reader or speech recognition may help. The UK Government’s Using assistive and accessible technology (ATech) describes these tools and notes that they can be useful to older people as well as people with disabilities or health conditions.
Start with the difficulty you want to address—such as reading on-screen text or entering information—and explore features that match it. Age alone does not determine whether someone needs assistive technology, and a feature is not a guaranteed solution for a health condition.
