On a Samsung Galaxy, “Sound Notifications” usually means an accessibility feature that listens for selected sounds around you, such as a smoke alarm or a crying baby. It is different from the tones your phone plays for messages and app alerts. To set up environmental sound detection, look under Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements; to restore a missing notification tone, check the app’s notification settings and your phone’s sound controls.
What Samsung Sound Notifications do
Samsung lists Sound Notifications—called Sound detectors on some devices—among Galaxy accessibility features for hearing. When enabled, the feature can alert you to selected environmental sounds. Samsung’s examples include a smoke alarm beeping and a baby crying. The available sounds and behavior are not necessarily the same on every Galaxy model.

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series manual describes vibration alerts and a timeline or log where detected events can be reviewed. Those details are specific to that manual; check your own device’s settings for its available detection choices and alert behavior. Samsung’s Hearing enhancement guide describes the feature and its place in Galaxy accessibility settings.

- Open Settings and select Accessibility.
- Tap Hearing enhancements, then look for Sound notifications or Sound detectors.
- On the Galaxy S23 series route documented by Samsung, tap Sound notifications, choose Open Sound notifications, and follow the on-screen instructions.
Samsung’s general support guidance places the feature under Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements, but menu labels and availability vary by model and software version. If you do not see it, search for “Sound notifications” in Settings or consult the support information for your device. To disable it on the documented S23 interface, use the Use Sound Notifications control in its settings. The S23 manual also says voice recognition will not operate while Sound Notifications is on; verify this limitation on your device rather than assuming it applies across Galaxy models. See the Galaxy S23 series manual.

Environmental alerts versus ordinary phone notifications
| What you mean | What triggers it | Where to look | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sound Notifications or Sound detectors | A selected sound in the surrounding environment | Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements | An accessibility alert; the S23 manual describes vibration and a logged timeline |
| Ordinary notification sound | An event in an app, such as a message or email | Settings > Notifications for app alerts; Settings > Sounds and vibration for sound controls | The phone plays a notification tone if the app and sound settings allow it |
App-specific notification categories and sound choices may be available, but controls depend on the app, Galaxy model, and software version. Samsung’s guides to notification problems and sounds, vibrations, and notifications cover these separate settings.
Fix ordinary Galaxy notifications that are missing or silent
First distinguish between a notification that never appears and one that appears without a sound; the checks differ. Settings names can vary across Galaxy models and One UI versions.

If the notification does not appear
- Open Settings > Notifications and check that the app is allowed to send notifications. Review its notification categories if they are shown.
- Check whether the app is in a deep-sleep state, which can affect notifications.
- Check Do not disturb and its allowed exceptions. Do not disturb silences calls and notifications unless an exception permits them.
If the notification appears but has no sound
- Go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Volume and raise Notifications.
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements and confirm that Mute all sounds is off. This setting can mute notifications as well as media and system sounds.
- Check Do not disturb and its exceptions, since it may silence the alert even when the notification is visible.
- If the settings look correct, restart the device and check again.
