Depending on the vehicle, it may handle or coordinate functions such as lighting, door locks, power windows, seats, and windshield wipers. It is not the engine computer, and it does not necessarily control every electrical feature.
What a body control module does
A BCM is one of several electronic modules in a vehicle. Its role is generally to manage or coordinate body-related functions, rather than control the engine. HELLA describes BCMs as combining comfort and safety functions with power management, and identifies lighting, seat heating, and windshield wipers as examples. That is a general supplier description, not a specification that applies to every vehicle. HELLA’s body control module overview is dated July 24, 2015.

Depending on the vehicle’s design, a BCM may directly operate a feature or communicate with another module that operates it. Which functions belong to the BCM varies by make, model, and system architecture.
Which features may be controlled or coordinated by a BCM?
- Lighting: Interior or exterior lights may be managed by the BCM.
- Locks and windows: The module may operate or coordinate power door locks and power windows.
- Seats: Some vehicle designs involve the BCM in seat functions, such as seat heating.
- Wipers: Windshield-wiper functions may be controlled or coordinated through the BCM.
These are examples, not a checklist of equipment controlled by every BCM. The owner’s manual or vehicle-specific service information is a better guide to a particular car’s system layout.
#1 Best Overall
- This part requires programming and/or special setup procedures. GM Service Information or equivalent describes the procedures and special tools needed to ensure proper operation in the vehicle
- Dictates the operation of your vehicle’s vital systems, which is critical to the performance of your vehicle
- GM recommended replacement part for your GM vehicle’s original factory component
- Manufactured to GM OE specification for fit, form, and function
- Manufactured to meet or exceed strict quality requirements
Does an electrical problem mean the BCM has failed?
No. A problem with lights, locks, windows, battery charge, or starting does not by itself establish that the BCM is defective. Similar symptoms can have other causes, and the correct checks depend on the vehicle and complaint.
Manufacturer service information emphasizes following vehicle-specific diagnostic procedures and checking related systems. Diagnosis may include relevant fuses, power and ground connections, wiring, connectors, module communication, and diagnostic trouble codes. The applicable service procedure determines which checks are needed; a symptom alone is not enough to identify the failed part.

Why the scan tool matters
A generic code reader is not guaranteed to show body-module data or support BCM service functions. A technician may need a scan tool with coverage for the exact make and model, as well as the ability to access the relevant body systems. FCA’s May 24, 2025 BCM update notice illustrates that manufacturer-specific procedures may apply: FCA service information hosted by NHTSA.
What to know before replacing a BCM
A replacement BCM may require more than installation. Depending on the vehicle, it can need configuration, VIN registration, key pairing or learning, or other security-related procedures. For example, a Nissan procedure hosted by NHTSA lists vehicle-specification writing and several registration or pairing steps, including tire-pressure sensor ID registration where equipped. Those requirements apply to that procedure, not to every vehicle: Nissan Body Control System service procedure.

Tesla’s service manual for 2012–2020 Model S documents BCM replacement steps that include body-controller and security-controller VIN learning, key relearning, and an immobilizer reset. It also notes that access to some security-related Toolbox actions is limited to Tesla employees or authorized third parties. This is one vehicle-specific example, not a universal replacement checklist: Tesla Model S BCM removal and replacement procedure.
Confirm fitment and programming before buying
Before purchasing a replacement, confirm compatibility by the vehicle’s VIN and check the manufacturer’s procedure for configuration and security requirements. A part that appears similar may not be interchangeable, and programming support may affect whether the repair can be completed. The service information cited here does not establish universal interchangeability or current replacement prices.

Choosing a diagnostic or repair option
For a suspected BCM problem, ask whether the repair shop supports the exact make and model, can access body-module data, and has the equipment and authorization needed for required configuration or security routines. If considering a scan tool, verify its body-module coverage and service functions for the specific vehicle rather than relying on a general claim that it reads diagnostic codes.
