If sweet bell peppers seem to upset your stomach, first look for a repeatable pattern rather than assuming peppers are the cause. Note how much you ate, whether they were raw or cooked, what else was in the meal, and when symptoms started. Bell peppers are included among vegetables allowed on a low-FODMAP diet, but that general classification cannot predict how you will respond to a particular meal or portion.
Why do bell peppers upset my stomach?
A meal-related symptom does not by itself identify the food responsible. Portion size, sauces and other ingredients, the overall meal, and an existing digestive condition may all be relevant. A short record can help you see whether symptoms repeatedly follow bell peppers or instead appear after a particular type of meal.

For several days, write down:
- How much pepper you ate and whether it was sweet bell pepper or a hot pepper.
- Whether it was raw or cooked, and what else you ate or drank with it.
- What symptoms occurred, when they began, and how long they lasted.
The NHS describes food histories and diaries as useful when investigating suspected food reactions. They can help you explain a pattern to a clinician, but they are not a diagnosis: NHS guidance on food allergy.

Bell peppers appear on MedlinePlus’s list of vegetables that can be eaten on a low-FODMAP diet. That means the cited guidance does not support calling sweet bell peppers universally high-FODMAP or a universal IBS trigger. It does not guarantee that every person will tolerate every quantity or preparation. For IBS, FODMAPs are carbohydrates that may be poorly absorbed and fermented; NICE describes possible effects including bloating, wind, discomfort or pain, and diarrhea.

Does cooking bell peppers make them easier to digest?
The guidance cited here does not establish that cooking or peeling sweet bell peppers prevents digestive symptoms. If you want to explore whether preparation matters for you, record raw and cooked servings separately while keeping the rest of the meal as similar as practical. Treat the result as a personal observation, not proof that a particular preparation is generally easier to digest.

Could the problem be spicy peppers, reflux, or an allergy?
Sweet peppers and hot peppers are not interchangeable
Sweet bell peppers are different from spicy peppers. The British Society of Gastroenterology discusses capsaicin—the spicy component of red peppers—in relation to functional dyspepsia. It reports that capsaicin can induce nausea, warmth, and pain, with more severe effects in people with functional dyspepsia than in healthy volunteers. That finding concerns capsaicin and spicy pepper; it should not be applied automatically to sweet bell peppers. Read the British Society of Gastroenterology functional dyspepsia guideline.
Reflux symptoms
If the main problem is heartburn or reflux, consider the whole meal and any triggers you already recognize. NIDDK lists spicy foods among foods commonly linked with GERD symptoms, while noting that triggers vary. Its guidance does not identify sweet bell peppers as a specific trigger; discuss suspected triggers with a doctor. See NIDDK guidance on eating and GERD.

Possible food allergy
Intolerance and allergy are different. Intolerance may cause bloating or abdominal pain, often a few hours after eating. Allergy can involve digestive symptoms as well as symptoms elsewhere in the body, such as a rash or swelling. A stomachache together with a rash can be a sign of anaphylaxis, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Do not test a suspected food allergy by eating the food again at home.
Sudden difficulty breathing or swelling of the throat or tongue after eating requires emergency help. For more on symptoms and urgent reactions, consult the NHS food allergy guidance and ACAAI’s food allergy information.

How to test whether sweet peppers are the trigger
If symptoms are mild and there are no signs of allergy, avoid removing several foods at once: changing many things makes it harder to identify a pattern. Ask a healthcare professional whether a one-food trial makes sense, especially if symptoms recur, are severe, or remain unexplained.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose one suspected food. Keep the trial focused on sweet bell peppers rather than also cutting out other vegetables or whole food groups.
- Agree on a limited trial period. NICE says single-food avoidance is usually tried for 2 to 4 weeks for IBS symptoms. That is a guideline recommendation, not evidence about how often peppers cause symptoms. Follow a clinician’s advice if they recommend a different plan.
- Track symptoms and other meal details. Use the same kind of diary, noting timing, amount, preparation, and accompanying ingredients.
- Reintroduce gradually if it is safe and appropriate. NICE recommends gradual reintroduction after the agreed period to check whether the food causes or worsens symptoms. Do not reintroduce it at home if you have had possible allergy symptoms; discuss that with a clinician instead.
- Review the pattern with a professional. If symptoms return, or the trial gives no clear answer, a clinician or dietitian can help assess other explanations without extending unnecessary restrictions.
NICE explains the single-food approach in its IBS dietary management quality statement.
