How to Protect Torrey Pines and Other Native Trees After a Wildfire

A cautious post-fire plan for coastal Southern California: check hazards, give uncertain trees time, protect soil and roots, and follow land-manager rules.

After a wildfire, protect people first, then assess trees and slopes before deciding what to water, prune, remove or replant. A scorched tree is not automatically dead, and rushing to clear or reshape a burned site can damage roots and worsen erosion. The right response depends on whether the tree is in a home landscape or a natural area, how severely it was injured, and who owns or manages the land.

What should I do first after a wildfire?

  1. Stay clear of immediate hazards. Do not enter an unstable burned slope or approach a tree that might fall. Keep people away from hanging limbs, leaning trunks and areas where rain could trigger runoff or slope failure.
  2. Identify the land manager before doing work. Confirm whether the tree is on private property, a public right of way, or protected land. Ask the relevant agency or municipality about rules before cutting, planting, seeding or installing erosion controls.
  3. Get a qualified arborist to assess a large or hazardous tree. This is especially important when a tree could strike a home, road or trail. A visual check by a homeowner cannot reliably predict whether every fire-damaged tree will survive.

Residential tree-care advice does not automatically apply to a reserve, park or wildland slope. Irrigating, wrapping or disturbing soil in a natural area can be inappropriate even when the same action might make sense for a landscape tree.

How do I know if my tree will survive?

Survival depends on the species, the tree’s condition before the fire and the degree of injury. An immediate inspection may not settle the question: UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) says buds and shoots that develop in the spring after a fire can make the outlook clearer. Unless there is an immediate safety concern, avoid removing an uncertain tree just because its foliage or bark is scorched.

Living With Fire lists green or white, moist cambium beneath the bark and green, moist, flexible buds as encouraging signs. These are observations, not a guaranteed diagnostic test. Fire injury can be difficult to judge, so waiting until the following spring may be worthwhile when it is safe to do so.

Torrey pines: distinguish one fire from another

Torrey pine outcomes vary by place and fire severity. The Torrey Pines Conservancy reports that all 50 Torrey pines within the perimeter of the 2024 fire in the Torrey Pines Reserve Extension were lost, although several seedlings were observed afterward. That finding applies to that specific burn perimeter, not to every Torrey pine or wildfire.

Santa Rosa Island faced a separate, much larger fire in 2026. The National Park Service (NPS) reported that the fire burned 18,379 acres—almost two-fifths of the island—between May 15 and June 4, 2026. Its initial assessment estimated that 60% to 80% of the island’s Torrey pines may perish; that is an estimate, not a final mortality count. The NPS cited a 2014 inventory of more than 24,000 Torrey pines of all ages, including approximately 3,000 mature cone-producing trees.

How should I water a fire-stressed residential tree?

First check whether water can soak into the burned soil. UC ANR advises checking infiltration before irrigating because burned soil can repel water. If water runs off instead of soaking in, its residential guidance suggests loosening the soil surface and applying a thin layer of weed-free straw. Do not apply that advice as a reason to disturb a recovering wildland slope: protect existing roots and follow the land manager’s direction there.

When water does infiltrate and irrigation is appropriate for a residential tree, UC ANR recommends wetting the root zone across the dripline—the outer edge of the canopy—and a few feet beyond, to roughly 12–15 inches deep. Apply water slowly, check how deeply it has penetrated, and monitor soil moisture rather than relying on a fixed timer. Stop if water is running off. This is broad residential guidance, not a species-specific watering calendar for every native tree.

When can I prune a burned pine?

Do not hurry to prune every scorched or damaged limb. Some trees recover, and waiting for regrowth can help clarify which parts are alive. Remove or arrange appropriate care for limbs that are broken, dead or dangerous; do not leave an immediate hazard in place simply because the tree’s long-term survival is uncertain.

UC ANR specifically advises waiting until fall to prune damaged pines because pruning can attract bark beetles. Fire-stressed trees can also face beetle attack. Living With Fire identifies pink to red pitch on branches as a warning sign; have a qualified arborist assess concerning trees, particularly when they are large or near people and structures.

Should I protect a burned trunk from sun?

For a suitable residential landscape tree with canopy loss, UC ANR describes protecting the trunk and large limbs from sunburn until canopy regrowth with permeable, light-colored cloth, cardboard or tree wrap, or water-based white paint. Avoid oil- or petroleum-based products, which can damage plant tissue. This is an option for appropriate landscape trees, not a treatment to apply indiscriminately in a natural burn area.

How can I stop erosion after a wildfire?

With vegetation reduced, exposed soil can be carried away by runoff when rain returns. Choose temporary erosion controls to fit the slope, drainage and nearby structures or trails, and use current local guidance. San Diego County’s post-fire homeowner guidance lists options including plastic sheeting, straw mulch blankets, jute mesh, excelsior matting, geotextiles, straw-bale dikes, fiber rolls or wattles, hydraulic mulching, silt fences, and native annual or perennial seeding.

Do not strip remaining vegetation or disturb existing roots as a blanket cleanup measure. The County cautions against both; natural regrowth can contribute to long-term recovery. A product or erosion-control method is not a substitute for assessing a steep slope, concentrated runoff or a hazard near a structure.

On burned Santa Rosa Island hillsides, the NPS reported work underway to install about 250 wattles, covering more than 4,500 linear feet, to slow rainwater and hold soil and seeds until native vegetation recovers. That is a site-specific restoration effort, not a prescription for every property.

Should I replant, or let native vegetation recover?

Do not assume a burned site needs immediate reseeding or planting. The California Native Plant Society’s 2019 Fire Recovery Guide covers fire ecology, erosion, damaged trees, reseeding and defensible space, and advises that rushed attempts to repair land can make conditions worse. Where safety permits, monitoring natural recovery and intervening only where justified can avoid unnecessary disturbance. Severe erosion, invasive species or other specific problems may warrant action with local ecological expertise.

The 2024 Torrey Pines Reserve Extension burn illustrates why recovery should be assessed rather than presumed. A spring 2025 survey by San Diego Natural History Museum botanists, reported by the Torrey Pines Conservancy in 2026, recorded 110 plant species in that burn area. A little more than half were reported as returning from seed, with the remainder resprouting from surviving root crowns. Those observations describe that site alone.

For Santa Rosa Island, the NPS reported collecting more than 14,000 Torrey pine seeds after the 2026 fire. Viable seeds are planned for nursery propagation, planting and seed banking. The NPS also described a plan to restore a 15-acre area at approximately 300 to 500 seedlings per year; that is a planned rate, not a completed planting result. Recovery actions in a protected natural area should be left to its land manager or coordinated with that manager.

What rules apply to Torrey pines and other native trees?

Rules depend on ownership, location and habitat protections. The Torrey Pines Conservancy says natural groves are protected at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and on Santa Rosa Island. It also notes restrictions on public-right-of-way trees in San Diego and stricter rules in Del Mar for protected Torrey pines. Confirm current requirements with the relevant agency or municipality before pruning, removing or planting a tree, or altering the surrounding ground. Permission to work on a residential tree should not be assumed to cover a nearby public or protected tree.

Choose action by site, risk and recovery

Situation Practical response
Tree or slope presents an immediate danger Keep people away and contact the appropriate emergency service, land manager or qualified professional; do not enter an unstable area.
Uncertain tree in a residential landscape, with no immediate hazard Monitor for spring buds and shoots; water only when appropriate and after checking infiltration; delay nonessential pruning.
Burned slope or tree in a reserve, park or habitat-sensitive area Identify the land manager and follow its instructions before watering, pruning, planting or installing controls; preserve roots and recovering vegetation where possible.
Exposed soil with runoff or erosion concerns Match temporary stabilization to the site and local guidance; seek help when slope instability or concentrated drainage makes homeowner work unsafe.
