A Blu-ray Disc is an optical disc format used to distribute and record high-definition video and to store data. Its name comes from the blue laser used to read it. Standard Blu-ray discs are listed at 25GB for a single-layer disc and 50GB for a dual-layer disc; Ultra HD Blu-ray is a separate format that supports up to 3840 × 2160 resolution and HDR.

What does “Blu-ray Disc” mean?

Blu-ray Disc is the format’s name; Blu-ray disc is the common generic spelling. It is an optical disc, meaning a laser reads data encoded on its surface. The format was developed for high-definition video distribution and recording, as well as data storage. The Blu-ray Disc Association lists standard single-layer capacity as 25GB and dual-layer capacity as 50GB. Those figures describe storage capacity, not a fixed movie duration: how much video fits depends on how it is encoded.

Why is it called Blu-ray?

The name refers to the blue laser beam used to read Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, in contrast to the red laser used for DVDs and CDs. The Blu-ray Disc Association explains that the blue laser and the format’s lens specifications allow a smaller focused beam and denser data pits than DVD. That greater data density is part of how Blu-ray stores more data on a disc of similar physical size. Blu-ray Disc Association FAQ

When was Blu-ray Disc introduced?

Sony reported on February 19, 2002, that nine companies had jointly established the format’s basic specifications. The announcement described Blu-ray Disc as a next-generation, large-capacity optical video-recording format and referred to the blue-violet laser used at the time. This is launch-era history, not a complete statement of today’s format specifications. Sony Group announcement, February 19, 2002
