Update Minecraft Education through the channel used to install it: Windows desktop, Microsoft Store, Chromebook, Mac, and iPad have different steps. Before manually uninstalling and reinstalling the app, back up your worlds; Minecraft Education warns that a manual uninstall may delete them. To check whether an update worked, look for the version number in the lower-right corner of the home screen.
Choose the update method for your installation
The right update route depends on both the device and how Minecraft Education was installed. On a school-managed device, the organization may control when an update becomes available.

For Store- or administrator-managed installations, the update may not appear immediately if automatic updates are disabled or the organization controls deployment. If you cannot update, check with your school’s IT administrator before removing the app.

Minecraft Education’s support guidance distinguishes automatic updates from manual reinstallations: it says worlds are not deleted during automatic updates, but warns that uninstalling the current version during a manual update may delete worlds.

- Back up your worlds first. Do this before uninstalling the app. Keep the backup somewhere you can access after reinstalling.
- Uninstall the current version. Only proceed after confirming the backup is available.
- Download and install the latest version. Use the official Minecraft Education download page.
- Open the app and verify the version. The version number is shown at the lower-right edge of the home screen.
On a Mac, the official FAQ directs users to install the app manually from the download page. For a Windows, Chromebook, or iPad installation that normally updates through a store or managed channel, use that channel rather than assuming a manual reinstall is necessary.
Update a dedicated server separately
The dedicated server uses its own package and migration process; updating the end-user app does not update the server. Minecraft Education’s support instructions say to download the latest server package, stop the old server, and transfer the required data before starting the replacement.

- Stop the old server.
- Copy the session JSON, worlds folder, server properties, allowlist, permissions, and any customized files into the new server directory.
- Start the new server and confirm its version in the startup output.
Check the installed version and current release
Open Minecraft Education and read the version number at the lower-right corner of the home screen. The official support article describes this location as the “lower right hand edge” of the home screen.
Version labels can differ between official pages. The download page lists version 1.26.32, while the change log labels its August 5, 2026 release 26.32 and says numbering changed to a year-and-release format. Check the download page and change log for the current listing and release details.

When an update or installation does not work
- The Windows desktop app does not find an update: The check occurs when a user logs into the computer. A network that blocks
downloads.minecrafteduservices.comcan prevent the check. - The update is missing from a school device: Ask the administrator whether the app is managed and when updates are deployed.
- The app cannot be installed on an older device: Check the current Minecraft Education system requirements. The listed minimums include ChromeOS 114, macOS 14, Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit), Android 8, and iOS/iPadOS 15. Requirements can change; Linux distributions and emulation are not supported.
