If your Windows 11 screen started flickering after a graphics-driver update, the display driver is a likely cause—but an incompatible app can look similar. Microsoft’s first diagnostic is to check whether Task Manager flickers too. If it does, troubleshoot the driver; if it stays steady while other content flickers, investigate apps. The timing points to a possible connection, not proof that the update caused the problem.
What the flickering pattern can tell you
Microsoft says Windows 11 screen flickering is usually caused by a display-driver issue or an incompatible app. Task Manager helps distinguish which branch to try first, but it is an indicator rather than a definitive test.

| What you see | More likely cause | What to try next |
|---|---|---|
| Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the screen | Display-driver issue | Try the driver steps below, starting with rollback if the problem followed a recent update. |
| Task Manager stays steady while other content flickers | Incompatible app | Update or uninstall likely incompatible apps, then check whether flickering stops. |
To open Task Manager, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. You can also press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and choose Task Manager. This diagnostic and the likely causes are described in Microsoft’s Windows flickering guidance.
Try a quick graphics reset and restart
- Press Windows logo key+Ctrl+Shift+B once. This resets the graphics driver and may resolve the flicker.
- If the screen continues to flicker, restart the PC and check again.
These are low-effort first steps, not a diagnosis or guaranteed fix. Microsoft also documents them for external-monitor troubleshooting in its external monitor guidance.

Roll back the display driver if the problem followed an update
If flickering began after a recent Windows or graphics-driver update, Microsoft recommends rolling back the display driver in Device Manager and restarting Windows.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your display adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver.
- Follow the prompts, then restart the PC.
Rollback requires administrator privileges. The button may be unavailable if Windows does not have a previous driver to restore. Microsoft explains the rollback requirement in its Device Manager driver guidance.

Update or reinstall the driver if rollback is unavailable or ineffective
Microsoft’s next options include updating or uninstalling the display driver. Use the driver intended for your PC or graphics adapter; depending on the device, you may need to get it from the PC or adapter manufacturer. Follow that manufacturer’s model-specific instructions rather than assuming every installer works the same way.
If you uninstall the display driver, restart Windows afterward. Windows will attempt to reinstall it. Microsoft outlines these options in its screen-flickering guidance and external monitor guidance.

Update or remove apps if Task Manager stays steady
If Task Manager does not flicker while the rest of the screen does, test the app branch rather than assuming the graphics driver is responsible.
- Update the likely app through Microsoft Store or the app manufacturer.
- If the flicker continues, uninstall potentially incompatible apps one at a time, checking the screen after each change.
Microsoft recommends these app troubleshooting steps in its Windows flickering guidance.

There is no single driver version or hardware cause established for every Windows 11 flicker case. A dated Microsoft notice describes a separate compatibility issue in which certain Nvidia display-adapter driver versions could cause loss of display after upgrading to Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, with a safeguard hold described until an updated Nvidia driver was installed. That notice concerns a specific upgrade and driver situation; it should not be treated as a general explanation for flickering or as confirmation that the safeguard remains active. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 24H2 release-health notice.
