On current iPhones, the setting commonly called “USB Restricted Mode” appears in Settings as Wired Accessories. It controls whether wired accessories and computers can connect while your iPhone is locked, or whether you must unlock the phone or approve the connection. Find it at Settings > Privacy & Security > Security > Wired Accessories.
What Wired Accessories does
Wired Accessories manages connections over a cable, including connections to accessories and computers. Requiring an unlock or approval before a device can communicate limits the opportunity for a physically connected device to access the iPhone. Apple describes the aim as limiting the attack surface from physically connected devices while allowing ordinary accessory use; it is not a guarantee against every attack or malicious accessory.

Apple’s iPhone support instructions use the Wired Accessories label for the Settings control. The familiar term “USB Restricted Mode” remains useful when looking up the feature, but the current menu name is Wired Accessories.

How to find and change the setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to Security and tap Wired Accessories.
- Choose the policy available for your iPhone’s connector.
The available choices differ between USB-C and Lightning iPhones. Apple’s support page does not list particular iPhone models or iOS versions for these menus, so check the options shown on your own device rather than assuming a choice is available on every model.

Choose an option for your connector
USB-C iPhone

Apple lists the two approval-oriented choices—Always Ask and Ask for New Accessories—for USB-C, not Lightning. If your menu differs from these lists, follow the options displayed on your device.
What happens when the iPhone is locked
- A USB power adapter can charge the iPhone while it is locked. Other wired accessory communication may be blocked until you unlock the phone, and a connected accessory might not charge it.
- Once an accessory has connected after the iPhone is unlocked, it remains connected if the phone is locked again.
- If an accessory is not recognized, Apple recommends disconnecting it, unlocking the iPhone, and reconnecting it.
- Storage accessories always require the iPhone to be unlocked before use.
- On supervised devices, an administrator can control the Accessories setting through Apple Configurator or mobile device management.
Apple’s documented security timing rules
Apple Platform Security describes additional authentication and timing behavior for data connections over supported wired interfaces. The guide, published May 7, 2024, says Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode is required to activate data connections when no data connection has been established recently. Apple explains that this limits exposure to physically connected devices while preserving use of other accessories.

- More than one hour: If more than one hour has passed since the iPhone or iPad locked, or since an accessory’s data connection ended, no new data connections are allowed until the device is unlocked. During that hour period, only previously connected accessories are allowed; Apple says those accessories are remembered for 30 days after their last connection.
- More than three days: If no data connection with an accessory has been established for more than three days, new data connections are disallowed immediately after the device locks.
- Biometric reactivation: Apple also says data connections are inactive when a passcode is required to re-enable biometric authentication.
These are operational timing rules documented by Apple, not measurements of attack rates or independent tests of the setting’s effectiveness. Apple says the one-hour period helps frequent users avoid entering a passcode every time they connect and reflects the lack of a cryptographically reliable way to identify accessories before a data connection is established.
