It keeps address records and plans coordinated with services such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Domain Name System (DNS), so teams can see which addresses and subnets are assigned, available, or in use.
What IPAM manages
IPAM organizes address space from larger blocks down to subnets and individual allocations. Its records can show how much space is in use, what remains available, and what each assignment supports. In many environments, that inventory also connects addresses with DHCP pools and DNS names. IPAM Worldwide describes this as an inventory, DHCP, and DNS model.

IPAM can be a defined operational process, software, or a combination of both. For example, Microsoft describes its Windows Server implementation as an integrated suite for planning, deploying, managing, and monitoring IP address infrastructure, including automatic discovery and centralized management of address infrastructure and DNS servers. Its overview lists Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025, as well as Azure Local 2311.2 and later; check the documentation for details that apply to a particular deployment. Microsoft Learn: IPAM overview.
How IPAM differs from DNS and DHCP
DNS and DHCP perform specific network functions; IPAM coordinates the planning and records around address space. DHCP supplies configuration to hosts and can provide information such as router, recursive DNS, and NTP server settings. DNS resolves names to addresses. IPAM helps operators keep the address plan, DHCP allocations, and DNS records aligned. RFC 6632 describes DHCP’s configuration role, while IPAM Worldwide explains the relationship between subnet plans, DHCP pools, and DNS names.

| Function | What it does | How it relates to IPAM |
|---|---|---|
| IPAM | Plans, inventories, tracks, and monitors address space and its assignments. | Maintains the overall view and coordinates address-related records and processes. |
| DHCP | Provides configuration information to network hosts and, in common deployments, leases addresses to clients. | Its pools and allocations should match the address plan. |
| DNS | Resolves names to IP addresses. | Its records can be associated with assigned addresses and services. |
How IPAM applies to IPv4 and IPv6
IPAM covers both address families. IPv4 addresses are 32-bit numbers commonly written in dotted-decimal notation; IPv6 addresses are 128-bit numbers commonly written in hexadecimal. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) describes both formats and the hierarchy through which address resources are allocated, including allocations from IANA to Regional Internet Registries under global policy. IANA Number Resources.
IPv6 address management should not be reduced to DHCPv6 alone. RFC 8415 describes DHCPv6 as a protocol for managed configuration, including address allocation from server-provided prefixes. DHCPv6-assigned addresses have preferred and valid lifetimes. IPv6 networks can use other configuration approaches too, so the IPAM plan should reflect the mechanisms actually deployed. For a taxonomy of IPv6 capabilities grounded in IETF specifications, see the NIST IPv6 Profile.

Why accurate IPAM records matter
A dependable address inventory helps network teams identify available space, understand utilization, maintain subnet and pool plans, associate addresses with services, and coordinate changes. It is particularly useful when a network must be renumbered: RFC 9099 notes that IPv6 renumbering can be difficult without proper IPAM.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

RFC 9099 also cautions against treating hard-to-guess IPv6 addresses as a security control. Address records and planning support operations, but they do not replace appropriate access controls and network security practices.
